I love buying clothes for Mabel. Fact. I probably buy too much stuff (there are outfits she has literally worn only once because she’s grown so quickly) but I thoroughly enjoy it and after three months of learning about what fits, what washes well, quality, what’s convenient and what’s not in terms of brand and style choice I thought I’d share my personal experience.
Apologies in advance to those of you that have boys, I can only really talk about baby girl’s fashion but I’m hoping all you Mamas can share tips and advice in the comments section so this feature works out to be useful for as many folks as possible.

You know they say you can never have enough babygrows? Well whoever “they” may be are definitely right, especially during the first few months. I wanted Mabel to be as comfortable and as cosy as possible and with frequent nappy changes and, let’s face it, her wearing her milk as often as she was digesting it, you want something you can whip on and off in seconds and throw in the washing machine on a regular basis without the risk of shrinkage.
What with an abundance of very generous gifts and my small person retail therapy addiction we have tried just about every brand of babygrow/sleepsuit you can imagine and our favourite was the packs of three from John Lewis. They washed like new, were excellent value (three for £12-£15), were available in the prettiest designs and came complete with those handy fold over scratch mitts (I don’t know about you but we found the actual pull on gloves were crap, they didn’t stay on for longer than a couple of minutes). I loved this set of gingham, cherry print and polka dot so much we bought it in 0-3 months once Mabel had grown out of the newborn size. They are currently reduced to clear so get them whilst you still can! (We also have these ditsy floral print numbers and the cute sheep design that were unisex).
If I look at Mabel’s wardrobe the brand that appears the most is Mini Club by Boots, the 0-3 months are larger than any other brand we’ve tried so although they fit looser for longer, that also means they last beyond 12 weeks too. I have this retro blue flower print short sleeve romper and the version you can see in the bottom right image, they are PERFECT for summer and the material is really soft and stretchy. I bought both on the two for £8 offer.
I also love H&M, their sizing is slightly different so the fit for certain stages is great – I currently have quite a few 2-4 month pieces for example. This gorgeous cotton romper is one of my all-time favourite outfits and I’ve recently purchased a couple of these sweet dresses with matching frill knickers for the grand total of £2.99 each. H&M also do excellent sets (hat, leggings, sleepsuit, T-shirt etc) which are reasonably priced and make ideal newborn gifts.
My favourite brand in terms of “I want to buy EVERYTHING” is Zara baby. I have to stop myself from adding multiple items to my virtual basket as the designs are just so damn cool, I often think that if they made adult sizes I’d quite happily wear them myself. I recently bought this pineapple print T and denim dungarees in the sale. This cute ice cream print romper has also just been reduced by 40% (bottom middle image) and is just lovely. One thing I would say, I find the clothes come up rather small, she’s just 12 weeks yet the 3-6 month size fit her well, I can’t imagine them being roomy enough at 24 weeks plus.
The GAP also have some amazing seasonal collections, as do Mamas and Papas – both are high end in terms of price so it’s worth looking out for the sales (on now by the way, apologies in advance for potential plastic bashing during your lunch break). We bought quite a few items in January, there were lots of bargains to be had and if you can’t find your baby’s current size it’s worth buying larger sizes for the future, time flies faster than you think!
For classic beautifully-designed pieces you can’t beat The White Company. Go in for a candle, come out with several delicious dresses and the most ridiculously-gorgeous tiny person knitwear. My Mum bought Mabel some fabulous frockage for when she’s a little older and I am very appreciative, it’s so spendy I feel I would need to sell my soul just so I could be the proud owner of their mini cashmere cardigans. Notice I said “I” here, Mabel couldn’t give a monkeys where what she wears comes from so sometimes I just have to have a word with myself.
In terms of what I put Mabel in the most, aside from sleepsuits and rompers are easy “pull on” dresses because they are exactly that – easy. This pink floral one from M&S is only six quid and very pretty indeed. We’ve found any outfit that involves layers or indeed a pair of tights to be a bit of a pain in the arse so we save these get ups for special occasions and when we are at least 75% sure we can avoid some scary nappy action. Obviously we have got this wrong. On more than one occasion.
Where do you recommend for little people wardrobe content folks? Do you have one or two places you just can’t resist? Please feel free to add links to recent buys in the comments so I can have a nosey.

{Top Tips}
- Check the maximum weight recommendation on the sizing labels, brands vary massively – some 0-3 month sizing cater for up to 11.5lbs where as others cater for up to 14.5lbs for example.
- Sign up for online newsletters of brands you love and keep your peepers peeled on your inbox for the sales, I’ve found bargain baby clothes sell out fast so you have to be quick!
- One of the best value and useful items we’ve invested in was this chunky cardigan with ears from M&S, so useful for if it gets chilly. The “1 month” size still fits Mabel now and I’m going to buy it again it a larger size as we come into Autumn.

Zara has broken me. I love ALL their children’s clothing right the way through at the moment and have been guilty of buying some of it in 3-6, 9-12 and a 2-3 for Niema because I think I’ll be sad when she grows out of such a cute thing! I’ve also just bought tonnes of the girlswear from there for my eldests birthday and the pinapple pjs went down well for her sleepover! I tell myself I can put it away for Niema is older so its all ok… because pineapples will still be ‘very in’ in 9 years time?! Their baby jeggings are great I love that they can look like jeans without being that horrid hard denim that seems too rough on their little tummies. My fave outfit of hers from there is this one http://instagram.com/p/pgoj4DPfa9/?modal=true and I also picked up a similar dress from Next. Next are really good quality actually and do have some gorgeous pieces when you search though. I’ve found their play clothes wash really well (but not the uniforms when you get to school age actually) John Lewis for sleepsuits, Mamas and Papas or White Company for special, M&S when they do special ranges – look out for cashmere at Christmas time – I got a beautiful newborn grey cashmere cardy for £8 and matchy cashmere animal jumpers for all three kiddies that I’ve saved for the middlest birthday in a few weeks. I always do Christmas PJs (longjohn style ones are so lovely for boys and girls) and cosy hoody from Boden. Vertbaudet when you’ve a few spare hours to trawl through has some lovely things. Sleepsuits from Jojo Maman Bebe are really lovely quality and my sister in law got me some in a flash sale for £2! She says if you’re up in the night a lot you get the emails first! Ooh and Littlebird from Mothercare – the Jooles Oliver range are just adorable- I want to wear all of those in my size! I’m into dresses more now for Niema – I do love babies just being in a cosy white sleepsuit with their foldover mits – they just are so cuddly – but dresses make easy nappy access!
Oooh I forgot Little Bird Amanda! I have some cute pieces from there! I’ve actually not even considered Boden, will have to take a look.
Can’t wait to buy a Christmas outfit for Mabel (!) they had some hilarious reindeer and whatnot in John Lewis last year x
Boots Mini Club is a hidden gem, I get a lot of lovely stuff there for my 21 month old. As he’s a boy though the choice is a bit more limited – there always seems to be a lot more shop space given over to girl’s clothes!
Mothercare – quite good for very basic clothes, like jersey shorts and t shirt sets for the summer, but doesn’t seem as stylish as other brands. We got a lovely yellow raincoat from there which always gets compliments. I like dressing him in brights while he’s still little!
Next – did the best babygros when we were still in them, thick and cosy. Next stuff is pretty hardwearing too, the jeans from there have lasted really well. My son currently has these chinos with braces which I think are adorable! http://www.next.co.uk/x53876s9
Gap – Hoodies are great for layering and you can pick them up cheaper at the outlet stores.
Tesco – David goes to nursery 2 days a week so on those days he tends to be dressed in Tesco, they do great little combat trousers and long sleeved tops which I don’t mind him getting messy in.
M&S – can be a bit hit and miss, the Autograph range is really nice if a posh outfit is needed but they also have some nice colourful t shirts this summer. http://www.marksandspencer.com/4-pack-pure-cotton-assorted-t-shirts/p/p22303045
Hi Kathryn! Thanks for all of the recommendations! I love braces on little boys, so dapper!
I have a few bits from Next now Mabel is a bit older, they look lovely (I have a tutu dress and some denim shorts) but am yet to wash them to report back on how they fair.
I bought a few little T-shirts and leggings for Mabel from Tesco as a newborn but haven’t been back since, must remember to have a butchers. x
Omg this is up my street, my little one is 9months old and the absolute best item of clothing I have bought is these http://www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Baby-0-3yrs-Trousers-Jeans/Girls/73124/Baby-0-3yrs-Jersey-Dungarees.html
I have both colour ways and love that the sizes and extra buttons mean they are usable for ages and ages! Just upgraded to 6-12 months and think they will fit forever!
Sami these are lush! Amanda mentioned Boden above so now I want to buy things from there…lots of things. Oh dear.
Mabel is just gorgeous – a supermodel in the making.
Well I get to find out if my baby is a blue or a pink this Saturday – if it does turn out to be a pink one I have this saved ready for some serious plastic bashing! 🙂
Georgina! SO EXCITING….please do report back on whether blue or pink and what lovely things you decided to buy x
She has the best wardrobe ever! I’m in complete agreement that for the first few months babygros are the way forward. Don’t be suckered in by those cute little newborn outfits as they are far too fiddly and with constant changes you want the easiest and comfiest possible. Also, avoid any babygros with buttons/poppers up the back. I had some that were adorable but how on earth do you fasten them up when baby can’t sit up?! Also pull on trousers and tshirts are great for when they are wriggling or crawling as you can’t keep them still enough to get their nappy on let alone any fancy outfit! Now my little monkeys are bigger I have to say my absolute favourite is mini boden. Expensive but the cutest prints and proper baby style clothes. They always have sales on or 30% off and top tip is sign up and then don’t order anything for a while and low and behold you will normally get a £10 voucher in the post as incentive. I got all my family to do the same so between us we end up with quite a few. Other than that Little Bird or John Lewis is my go to brand. I like my girls to look like little girls not trendy and dressed up as most clothes at Next etc seem to be. While I still get to choose their clothes I will! x
Ah another Boden fan! why have I not heard of mini Boden before?!
Totally with you on poppers/buttons at the back, I put Mabel in a dress this morning and it was so bloody awkward! and then obviously it’s awkward to get off…..
Just don’t look at mini boden. You will want it all! x
My twin girls (non-ID) are now 22 months and now starting to show some interest in what they wear (Olivia seems to love green). My all time favorites are Zara baby and Boden when I’m feeling flush. I agree with Charlotte Zara comes up on the small side and the t-shirts are a little thin. I love Boden pajamas and the rompers but due to the price I often go on eBay and search Boden clothes- ‘brand new with tags’ to get a bargain.
My favorite gifts when they were wee were from Cath Kidston and The Little White Company as I definitely would not spend £20 on a dress x 2!!
In terms of quality they lived in John Lewis and Jojo Maman Bebe (they do twin discount via TAMBA membership) babygrows for the first year. I also have a lot of Gap clothes due to their fabulous sales- I love their leggings. Like Jasper Conran baby too!
But definitely get asked by other mums what brand they are wearing when they are dressed in Zara!
Mabel is looking beaut..little fashionista 🙂
Hi Sophie! I just ordered the cutest playsuit from Jasper Conran in the sale at Debenhams (haven’t looked at baby clothes from there before) it was reduced by 50% so could justify the price 🙂
Thanks for the ebay tip, I went on Mini Boden after the comments here and wanted to buy pretty much everything. x
Ps- need to give a shout out to Boys and Girls http://www.boysandgirlsshop.com …all organic and fairtrade clothes (owned by a friend) currently has a sale on, less in the way of baby clothes, but once your little one is over 12 months- lots of variety. I have noticed that Boots mini-club often copy their designs!
I can vouch for Boden washing well – some of Holly and Elijah’s stuff has lasted them 3-4 years of wear -and I’ve been passed down gifts I’ve bought for girl cousins which has been worn lots for Niema and its still in good condition – and its always popular at the second hand sales (probably because it will last) so is a bit of an investment if you want to sell anything on. It is gorgeous – but a little limited – for baby wear actually but for toddlers upwards there is loads – and as Charlotte said above, beautiful for allowing children to look like children, and play like children in the mud too! Also -if youre embarrassing like me its great for grown up jumpers -I like to have matching jumpers with the kids in the winter for cosy night in 🙂 and most of my jumpers are boden boys/girls as they’re lovely and so much cheaper (when on 40% off!) and go up to age 16! (I’m quite tall but still smaller than most 16 year old boys I reckon) I’m not alone either as I spy lots of mums in them now at the school gates.
Oh no! this Boden lark may cost me a small fortune…..
I often buy kids clothes (the one benefit of being petite/a short arse) and some of my favourite jumpers are actually an XS from mens ranges as they are a) cooler b) have that baggier/slouchy fit
Niema is going to have the best wardrobe x
My Elsa has pretty much everything that you just listed! I’m totally in love with basic items from Gap, I bought these amazing little organic shorts, so comfy! We’ve found that Elsa won’t feed if she isn’t comfy, so we whip her leggings off for feeds!
Mabel is such a cutie pie!
Thanks Kelly! Love the name Elsa. Mabel has the cutest coral shorts from The Gap, she will hopefully fit in them soon! x
Oh this post is so perfectly timed! I am mummy to one week old Jemima and so just learning about what does and doesn’t work clothing wise – but there are loads of items I would love to add to her shopping list here. So cute – and Mabel is just delicious!
I live in Brazil and baby clothes here are super expensive and low quality so we bought all of her wardrobe for the first few months in advance during our last trips to the UK and US. Completely adore newborns in baby grows so this is the majority of her clothing for now – we bought some super cute ones from Next and so far they are washing great! Also agree Boots Mini Club and John Lewis items are good quality and value for money too, I got some great sale deals from there.
One top tip for any expectant parents is sizing – Jemima was 8lbs exactly but anything newborn, especially M&S or Mamas and Papas drowns her. I bought some first size suits from Next and these fit perfectly. So definitely recommend some first size purchases too.
For more ‘special’ wear she has some fab pieces from Gap (bought in the US and on sale so great value) that I can’t wait for her to grow into. And re the Little White Company – a bit like the comment about Boden, once you sign up and purchase something they’ll often email with offers. I bought a friend a baby gift from there and since been able to benefit from some 10-20% vouchers! 🙂
Thanks for a great post Charlotte – sure my hubby will relish the next CC bill as a result 🙂 x
Oops, sorry Holly – I’m sure he won’t mind!
The Gap is such a bargain in the states, maybe I could organise a little holiday just for shopping? 🙂
Mabel is such a cutie. We have a few of these outfits too, too darn cute ;-).
I am a huge fan of zara mini, although I am worried I may need to re-mortgage, ha. Their stuff is so beautiful and so cool. I also love buying from h&m, gap (they always have discounts so well worth signing up for their emails) and little bird at mothercare. I found that the supermarkets have some fantastic bits and pieces, great value and styles considering how long they are in them for.
I seriously need to stop buying so much though as it breaks my heart when she out grows them all and they have hardly been worn. Xx
Louise I have just put a huge storage box full of 0-3 month pieces in the loft, it’s so sad, I always said I wouldn’t mind what we’d have if we are lucky enough to have another baby but now I think we should have another girl….she will have such a huge wardrobe waiting for her! x
Great post and absolutely gorgeous little girl! I have an eight week old boy, Arthur, and he’s currently too big for 0-3 things from most places, but not quite into 3-6 month sizes so I’m searching for his next round of clothes. I absolutely love love love Petit Bateau things but they are quite expensive – I’ve just discovered they do clothes for grown ups too! There goes my maternity pay. I’ve found that a lot of clothes for baby boys are very stereotypically ‘boyish’, blues, greens, browns, tractors, cars etc. I’d love to find more colorful unisex things with cool graphic pattern prints. Any suggestions anyone?
Hi Gemma, I saw some very cute things for boys in Mamas and Papas (they have a sale on) such as tweed shorts and cute braces. I found the same for newborn girls really – lots of pink and…pink. Pretty but not much variation, the 3-6 months age group seems to offer more variety though. John Lewis has some great boyish bits with anchors and patterns, I quite fancied them for Mabel x
Yet another Mini Boden fan here – in fact a Mini Boden addict might be a better description. My daughters have better wardrobes than me now (sad but true!)…
There are always Boden discount codes knocking around online and I’m pretty sure their sale is due to start this weekend, so hold off on any purchases for the minute.
Their A/W 2014 preview is online at the moment and has far too much gorgeous stuff in it – http://www.bodenpreview.co.uk/en-GB/Baby-0-3yrs-Clothing.html#nav I want it all!
Thanks for the tip Helen I will! very much fancy-ing the corduroy pinafore dress…
Loved reading this…even though I don’t have any little people of my own…YET, it’s definitely good to know what’s out there especially for gifts as pretty much everyone that I know is awaiting the arrival of little bambinos. Xx
Hi Lizzie! glad you found it handy, as gifts clothes are the best, so useful – Mabel used to have to be changed up to 4 times a day (!) so you get though loads. My washing machine is permanently on x
I know nothing about baby clothes but Charlotte my friend has a kids clothing company called Marmalade and Mash which has the coolest outfits!
Cute! will remember for when Mabel is a bit older – I like the playsuits especially x
Has to be mini Boden for me all the way, my little girl is 17 months and the little jumper dresses for winter are so soft and cute and wash so well. Currently the floral rompers and pretty summer dresses are her staple wardrobe, such good quality. If you sign up for the Boden emails and catalogue they often have 20% off and free delivery. I justify the cost my selling on eBay afterwards too, always hold their value really well. Oh and the white company baby towel with ears is the softest thing in the world, again they usually have 20% off. X
Just been looking on River Island website for my two older boys (9 & 8) as they are already very fashion conscious and noticed they now do a mini range too! Haven’t had a chance to look properly yet, but couldn’t resist sharing my new discovery!
