When it comes to my clothes I’m something of a style schizophrenic, with a wardrobe that’s equal parts girly (pretty dresses, statement skirts, high heels) and tomboy (slogan t-shirts, camouflage jackets, denim shorts, trainers).
I’m a high street shopper all the way and, for the most part, still prefer to buy clothes in real life than online. I buy fewer clothes now I no longer work in an office five days a week, so when I do splurge I have to be pretty confident that it’s long term love and not just a one season fling.
I didn’t really think there was a unifying theme to my, erm, look until I came to pull together five outfits for this feature and I realised that when it comes to my clothes, I’m more than a little partial to prints.
Floral prints, animal prints, camouflage prints and a small-but-growing category, pineapple prints, make up the majority of my wardrobe and, style rules be damned, I’m not afraid to mix them up…
Dress down Friday
Last year I went on a road trip around California, ending up Venice Beach, where I bought this top. In LA I wore it with my New Look denim shorts and flip-flops. In London right now I’m still wearing it with the shorts, but with the addition of thick tights and boots from TopShop. I’ve worn the denim shorts so often the cost-per-wear must be pennies by now. The boots are a little bit Isabel Marant but were a lot cheaper.
Animal print is a neutral
This Madewell animal print top was a sale bargain I picked up on a work trip. I like that the t-shirt shape is casual, but the crepe fabric elevates it from weekend wear. I’d been looking for the perfect leather skirt for ages and finally found this asymmetric one with multiple zips in Warehouse.
Skirting the issue
This TopShop skirt is one of those items I spotted in the shop and couldn’t stop thinking about. I wear it with a casual top, either a white vest, black t-shirt or grey marl sweatshirt. Then I’ll throw on my Whistles leather jacket and I’m good to go. The New Look shoes were cheap as chips and are way more comfortable than they look. The pineapple pendant is from Whistles.
All dressed up
Dresses are the lazy girl’s dressed up, because you don’t have to faff about working out what goes with what. I was working on a magazine and a colleague sent me a link to this Girl by Band of Outsiders floral dress saying, “This is so you.” She was right, I bought it immediately. The shoes are from Comptoir des Cotonniers.
Playing around
I bought this Whistles pineapple print playsuit to wear on Christmas Day a couple of years ago and, perhaps surprisingly, I’ve worn it lots since, for everything from meetings to nights out. The pineapple print makes me smile. What more can you ask for from an item of clothing?! The boots are from Comptoir des Cotonniers.
Someone once told me to never wear more than 20% animal print as it was vulgar. I think they were lying.
Ignore them! x
Oooo I’m loving that statement skirt! Gorg!
Thank you Rebecca! x
I do love Madewell. Do you think it’ll do a West Elm/J Crew and hop across the pond for us sometime soon?
Oh I do hope so. Love, love, love Madewell too! x
Congrats on the launch Miranda — these outfits are fabulous and super-inspiring! xxx
Aw, thank you Julia! x
LOVE the ‘skirting the issue’ look. It’s fun and stylish…but ever so slightly kick-ass as well! xx
Thank you Emma – it’s one of my favourite outfits right now! x
I think this website may be too cool and hip for me, but it like it so I’m staying! 🙂
