My day to day life often involves multiple bags of stuff. Baby paraphernalia, work related necessities (because one obviously needs at least 59 notepads right? especially if they’re pretty…) and my general day to day cosmetics/hair essentials/”just in case” garb.
I have definitely become much better at streamlining in recent months and I have to say, a relatively small change such as a more organised (and lighter!) handbag makes a significant change to my state of mind – no hyperbole intended.
As you read this I will be gathering together the final bits and pieces before we head on up to Cheshire to stay at James’s Mum’s, we are flying to the Dordogne from Manchester airport early tomorrow morning and Mabel will be staying with her Granny until Sunday.
[ezcol_2third id=”” class=”” style=””]
I have never been able to pack well for a holiday. I always include too many items I will never wear and not enough of the pieces that I actually would. I always take too many shoes. And bags. Don’t even get me started on the vast quantities of make-up and skincare that never even leave their designated zip up wallets.
For this trip I was determined to inject some logic and co-ordination, without scrimping on my personal style. It’s been an interesting task, not least because the weather in the Dordogne at the moment is doing all sorts of crazy things. I was expecting it to be moderately warm, much cooler in the evenings but apparently it’s somewhere around 27/28 degrees with a few thunderstorms thrown in just for “how are you supposed to dress appropriately for one of those?!” kicks. It seems Mother Nature is having a good old laugh at my packing inability expense.
I’ve tried not to steer too far away from my usual summer wardrobe, which tends to be a palette of metallics, nudes, greys and denim. With the odd print and cute slogan T thrown in for variety. I mainly live in flats on holiday, a pair of studded sandals from River Island and sliver gladiators from French Connection a few years ago. I’m also taking a pair of MEGA heels though, they were one of my all-time favourite footwear purchases ever, from All Saints. The combination of platform sole and pale fleshy hue means they make your pins look way longer. Winner.
At the moment I am very into my high-waisted shorts, they pull everything in and can easily be dressed up or down. Talking of which, that was the main thread of my capsule thinking – pieces that are flattering, fail safe and can be worn either in the day or in the evening with some mix “n” matching and the addition of some statement jewellery.
The maxi dress is the “Hayley” from Boohoo.com, fifteen quid and creates a lovely silhouette, it gives a great shape yet isn’t too clingy. I have one in black and one in grey and wear both in the day with a denim jacket or in the evening with a beaded cardigan. I always always take a pair of black skinny jeans with me because you never know if it might get a bit chilly, plus they are a super basic for accessorising with various night time glitzy bits. I treated myself to this ripped pair from Frame Denim, it’s been one of the only “trendy” investments I’ve made since Mabel was born.
The shorter dress is from Topshop* and I figured it would work with both heels and flats, it’s a modest length so you don’t have to flash your thighs and I love the elegant sleeve length. Plus I do like to inject some colour here and there.
I’m unsure about whether I’ll be brave enough to don a bikini but I’m taking one just in case – I bought this pineapple print two piece last year from J Crew and although spendy, it’s amazing quality and the fit is really good (i.e.. your bum cheeks don’t hang out of the sides.) I also rate J Crew for T-shirts, this palm tree patterned version is lightweight and a longer length which I prefer. I’ve also recently discovered ASOS own brand “Forever” T-shirts, they are only Β£12 each and are a kind of drapy/loose material that looks great with either skinny jeans and heels or shorts and flats.
I really rate Zara for bags, both the studded clutch and suede cross body were from there. The cross body gained so many compliments that I bought a back-up, who am I kidding? I bought two (!) they were Β£19.99 each. If you are already signed up to the newsletter (or sign up in the next few days) I’m actually giving one away. Storing three of the same bloody bag isn’t conducive to my general streamlining escapades.
*The Hayley dress has recently been reduced to Β£6!
*The review of the Topshop dress on line goes on about the small shoulders – I haven’t found that to be the case personally.
What are your “must haves” for a short break abroad?
Are there any items you would recommend I invest in that I haven’t featured above?
What do you always take on holiday that you never use?

{Thoughtful Travel Dressing}
When considering what I’m going to wear on the plane/train/automobile I endeavour to make sure the outfit will be most importantly, comfortable, but also includes useful layers that I may need for my holiday yet don’t necessarily want to overload my suitcase with.
I’ll be wearing my trusty khaki green J Brand “flight pants” (similar to joggers) a black vest, a fine knit long-line black cardigan and my Spring parka coat (by the sounds of things I may need that hood!)

I am about to go and sort my case for our weekend getaway (hoorah!). I’ve been told that in Verona (and other Italian destinations) you may be frowned upon entering churches etc with your thighs and shoulders out… Which I totally get. So, I have invested in a couple of midi skirts. I have a lush quilted one from Topshop that was only Β£22. I love it.
The weather is averaging about 25 degrees so I don’t want to be hot and still want to have some of my pins out so this for me was the perfect compromise. So Im planning on mixing them with tee’s in the day (shoulder issue sorted) and cool pumps and then dressing them up at night with vests, jewels and sandals. So similar to your set up… it’s all about taking those things you can mix and match. I’m also only taking hand luggage so I can’t take anything remotely bulky. I will let you know how I get on with that horrendous task!
Have a wonderful time. I’m off to enjoy an anniversary breakfast of… Rice Crispies… Before starting my packing.
x
Becky… how do you get away with makeup and skin care stuff when going “just hand luggage”. Supposed to be going to Edinburgh for new year (only 4 days) and am debating on going hold luggage as I cant bare them taking away my mac or clinque π
Well, I did it for a weekend to Ibiza a few weeks back and I got it totally wrong! The rule is you basically have to be able to fit all of your liquids into a very small plastic sandwich bag. Which yes is ridiculous. But maybe see about purchasing mini’s of those all important items (Im sure Ive had Clinique minis before), or decanting them into smaller 50 or 100ml bottles. I will be taking my Bare Minerals make-up which is generally powder so lucky to not have any liquid foundations etc. In terms of face cream, all of my items happen to either be 50 or 75ml so Im just hoping that I can get my 3 crucial bits (eye cream, day cream and night cream) into one little bag.
I’ll let you know how I get on π Good luck with your packing too!
Hi Clare! I’ve managed it a few times for short breaks, one I have the max hand luggage bag to fit um…maximum stuff in (an Antler pull along, it’s amazing) and as Becky said, I decant liquid items into smaller minis. For 4 days you don’t actually need that much moisturiser/eyecream etc. The majority of make-up doesn’t count as liquid (or at least mine doesn’t) so that doesn’t need to go in the sandwich bag. I put in a small shampoo, tiny pot of eye cream, small pot of face cream, decant a small cleanser and body lotion into those bottles from Boots and then it’s my mascara, liquid liner and lipstick that go in too. x
Love these outfits! great choices – I want to make my wardrobe a capsule wardrobe in general I don’t wear half my wardrobe any more it feels so unorganised!
Me too Vicky, I’m aiming to it before the end of the month, and then treat myself to a few “key” pieces that hopefully I’ll wear for at least a couple of years. x
I *may* have just bought a pair of plum coloured skinnies for my autumn capsule π
Living on an island, I’m a frequent traveller to Uk to visit friends and family. The best tip I can give is when stocking up on any of your usual skincare/makeup is to ask for lots and lots of samples. I’ve found Keihls, Clinique and Mac to be especially accommodating!
You tend to get more when it’s a bit quieter as the girls on the counters have a bit more time to chat and are usually more generous! My last trip to Keihls, I ended up with a 30ml sample of my face wash, and moisturiser plus a few mini perfumes, and recovery oils! Everything is all in proper packaging as well which is great as I find decanted bottles have a tendency to leak!
Great tip Sarah, I didn’t know MAC gave away samples?! Do you mean their skincare or make-up or both?
It’s the MAC travel bottles and jars I tend to use – they are a bit more spendy but great quality, I’ve used mine over and over again x
Might have to try the mac bottles then!
I’ve had mainly makeup samples from them. Not really tried their skincare with exception of the strobe cream which I love!
Thanks for the post, am in the Uk this weekend for a wedding so it’s actually got me thinking about what to take! I usually throw stuff in a bag five minutes before I leave and realise when I arrive that I’ve forgotten one key item.
Make-up samples?! I am so getting some of those! (I’m sure MAC is at Manchester airport…) I am taking my Strobe to France – it’s the best glow giver x
Really helpful post, full of good ideas and combinations! please can you indulge me in where the fab denim shorts are from?? Have a great ‘quality time’ holiday!
Liz they are from Topshop, a while ago now though sorry π
I do rate Topshop for shorts/denim in general though x
Charlotte are those maxi dresses clingy? Ie if you don’t have a completely smooth silhouette would you look ridonculous? π x
Hi Kitty! This style isn’t particularly no, and I get a size up as I don’t like VPL :)It’s worth maybe buying your size and the next one to try – the returns policy is easy and free x
A completely unrelated comment coming up…sorry!
Is there a problem with the website at the mo? When I try and open the blog via my bookmark or Google (using a firefox browser), the most recent post I can see is from Monday. I’ve only managed to get to this one by following the link on your Facebook page. Bizarrely, things seem to be working ok if I use a different browser on the same PC.
Do you know if the problem is your end or mine? I’m guessing it might be mine if nobody else has flagged it.
Thanks – and happy holidays!
I’m getting the same and have to refresh it a couple of times to show the most recent post.
Hi Helen and Victoria, thank for letting me know, I’ll ask Adam to look into it, it seems to be Firefox specific but even so we’ll get it sorted x
Hi Helen & Victoria, we do have a small issue that we are looking to resolve today. If you try refreshing your browser (reloading the site) a few times it should sort the problem but as of later today the problem should not be there at all.
Thanks,
Adam.
Just FYI I’m on Chrome and have the same issue
Refreshing didn’t seem to help yesterday and now it’s doing it on Chrome for me too.
Anyway, you’re on it so I will worry not!
I’m still getting this problem – just FYI! π
@Charlotte – I love that spangly jacket, is it an oldie?
Yeah love, it’s Topshop – I felt super cool when I saw Olivia Palermo wearing it some weeks after I already bought it π
All Saints do similar type stuff though, it’s worth keeping an eye out – I use it every season x
I’m off for a Spanish adventure next Thursday – 3 nights in Madrid and 3 nights in Seville – so excited! I’m also planning to pack sensibly as I usually also take too much and then end up wearing the same things!
I was going to ask where those denim shorts were from too – doh!
I have shorts, t-shirts, flats, a jumpsuit and a maxi all in mind plus a few extras. I don’t think it’s quite capsule wardrobe! I got some new orange Dune gladiator type sandals during the summer – can’t wait to wear them to hit the streets of Madrid π
Enjoy your break π
This sounds amazing Lynn, I’m off to check out orange gladiator sandals…
I have never been to Madrid or Seville, have a lovely time!!
My wifi isn’t great here so apologies if I’ve already half responded!
Swooning over this capsule collection – you will look so fab on hols π
I’ve always tried and failed to create my own capsule wardrobe – my efforts just end up with me buying just loads of very similar looking stuff and I still feel like I have nothing to wear. Until now however…Whilst not as exciting as your togs above, I recently discovered the ‘bump kit’ from Seraphine (currently 6 months preggers) The kit basically comprises of a lovely jersey dress, vest top, pair of leggings and jersey pencil skirt. The combination allows you to create loads of different looks relying on just these few essential ingredients – they even have a video to teach you! Even though I feel like I resemble a whale most of the time (pregnancy glow? – I don’t think so!) this little kit has honestly helped me create tons of different outfits and taught me a thing or two about where I was going wrong. I now plan to try and create my own ‘no-bump’ kit when my little-un is born.
Georgina I have never heard of this but it sounds like a great idea, especially if you like all 6 pieces and they fit well.
When I get back from holiday I am definitely having a wardrobe clear out, quite looking forward to it! x
Loved this – I need to perfect my capsule wardrobe and inspired by this I ordered the maxi dress – a total bargain and brilliant!! Thank you!! I’m heading away next weekend – it’s the perfect chance to see if can pack more effectively!!!!
Great Toria! so glad you like it, I’m wearing my black on on my instagram feed π x
