I absolutely categorically cannot believe that Mabel is 8 months old. It’s scary, the rate at which she is changing and growing, I endeavour to savour and capture every moment.
She is yet to crawl (there has been some significant rolling and bum shuffling) but she has learnt to…wave. As one does – much like the Queen! She waves in greeting and when she hears anyone say goodbye. This has not occurred without coaching from the grandparents I might add but nevertheless, it is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life.
On the weaning front we’ve had a difficult month where Mabel actually went backwards rather than progressing. She has caught so many coughs and colds recently that she simply hasn’t been that interested in food, only milk. The last week has been much better though and she’s been wolfing down beef stew (!) and chocolate biscotti like there’s no tomorrow. That’s another thing – Mabel knows what she likes and what she doesn’t. I’ve spent many a wasted hour knocking up batches of healthy and nutritious meals only to be met with defiant closed lips and the side of her (generous) cheek. This appears to be her way of communicating “I would rather starve than eat this disgusting tasteless rubbish Mama”
Gee thanks Mabel. How about we warm up another pouch of Ella’s Kitchen cheesy pie then shall we?
After every meal I encourage Mabel to feed herself a few things, this is going along swimmingly thus far. Canteloupe melon, organic fruity puffs (like watsits only with far less chemicals I’m assuming) and the aforementioned chocolate biscotti appear to be her favourite. I’ve tried a variety of vegetables which have been met with indifference. I have NO IDEA where she’s developed her obvious sweet tooth from. Ahem.
Talking of teeth, Mabel has two in the bottom and four coming through in the top, sleep deprivation wise this stage for us has been the most difficult. On Saturday night Mabel woke up so many times crying in pain I lost count, I know it was approximately every half hour though. As a result yesterday there was muchos caffeine consumed and not a lot of anything else achieved at all. Seeing Mabel so uncomfortable is heart breaking, I’m sure many of you have been through exactly the same experience. I have been looking at toys for teething kids anywhere and other things I can do to help the situation.
Mabel continues to do well at nursery, I won’t tell fibs and say that all of a sudden I’m over the fact I ship her off a few days a week so I can work. I’m not. But she is a sunny, happy, joyful baby (bar the teething) so I figure what we’re doing is A ok. Nursery has certainly been very helpful in encouraging her to try foods that I perhaps (at least at this stage) wouldn’t have considered. Turns out she enjoys a good curry. And every conceivable type of pudding. Surprise surprise.
James and I make an effort to go out just the two of us every few weeks or so, even if it’s just for a couple of hours. As you read this I’ll be taking a rare Monday off work so we can spend the day together in The Cotswolds getting in the festive spirit and hopefully purchasing some Christmas gifts for friends and family. There will be cake involved. And possibly mulled wine.
I’m on the hunt for a walker if anyone can recommend one? Also if anyone knows where I can purchase some cute brown lace up type shoes and a mustard cardigan (!) that would be fab. I have the loveliest dress and tights from Zara and I just need the finishing accessories.
Yes, I am living my life vicariously (and fashionably) through my 8 month old daughter.
As with all of these posts, feel free to ask any questions on this stage – I’ll do my best to share my thoughts and advice. On that note, your own helpful hints and experiences are most welcome in the comments section below.
You can see all of this baby spam and more on my personal instagram account.
Oh Charlotte, she is just a dream! So cute! I’m sorry to hear about her teething situation, it must be heartbreaking to see her in pain.
Elsa is now 7 months, she’s in the process of mastering the crawl (more of a drag at the moment) but she is still very much a gummy bear! I’m pretty sure her teeth will be making an appearance soon though as she is dribbling like a trooper and the telltale red cheeks have appeared.
Good luck finding the additions to the outfit, I’m sure you will find them soon xx
Some of my NCT friends babies are yet to have any teeth Kelly – I think Mabel has quite a lot for her age?!, congratulations on the crawling, I’m getting ready to child proof the house in preparation! x
Mabel is just too cute!
Can totally sympathise with the sleepless nights. Hopefully it will pass soon and then you can experiment with more textured food.
Zach’s teeth came through early and one straight after the other. He turned one a couple of weeks ago and has 7 teeth (one of which is a molar – he really struggled with that one) and is cutting 3 more. You can imagine. At least he can eat “regular” meals which is time saving. He has mastered walking also (I cried… a lot) I’m sure he only just started crawling… where does the time go?! So yes do cherish every moment.
We purchased the Moover wooden baby walker. It is a little pricey but super cute and sturdy and if you plan on having another baby then it will last.
Have a lovely time in the Cotswold’s xx
Thanks Jennifer, will check out the Moover, not heard of that one! I think the same about Mabel – the teething is painful but at least she’s chewing well! x
We don’t have our own children yet (just 2 sausage dogs that I call ‘my babies’!) but I have to say, Mabel is possibly the cutest baby I have seen in yonks!! She is gorgeous! And I am loving her Christmas attire! Slightly off piste, but I love the winter jumper you are sporting, can I ask where you got it?! 🙂
Hi Jenna! it is from Topman (!) I find the best knitwear in the mens sections of high street shops. I just buy the smallest size and wash it hotter than recommended to shrink it a bit. I hope the sausage dogs will be wearing festive jumpers 🙂 x
Thank you, what a fab idea! Of course they will be! Jeffrey (my wiry wiener – Alan is his smooth bro) has his own blog http://www.sausagetails.com if you fancy a giggle looking at a sausage dog in all sorts of jumpers!
Pah hahahahahha x
There can only be so many teeth right?? I can’t remember how many but it can’t just keep going can it!? We are nearly 8 months now and Niema already is on her 9th tooth!
Mustard cardigan-wise I’m not sure if they still have it but I’ve picked up one in John Lewis a gazillion times and almost bought it… I’m sure it was there last week when I went in to buy Niema’s Robin Christmas Onzie <3 <3 <3 http://instagram.com/p/wDtrmavfWy/?modal=true 😀 (sorry I am SO excited about December)
Food is a big unpredicatble mess for us too but my sister in law who is a midwife says 'Food before one is just for fun' She says all the calories and nutrients they need are all in their milk so just don't worry about how much they are getting. Sounds as though if she's not well and drinking her milk still then thats the best possible thing. There are days Niema doesnt want what I've made and so we just leave her to play with it, drop it on the floor etc but no big deal and we'll try again another day. And I try not to worry about the state of the floor …too much …although that bit kills me. But that top left pic of Mabel is utterly amazing. I need to embrace the fun that can be had flinging food around. Maybe I'll try it with my own dinner?
Sometimes I wonder how on earth Mabel manages to get food in her hair, ears (!) …….feet! it goes everywhere. I have these fantastic “all covering” bib things from Ikea – would highly recommend. x
Mabel has the best wardrobe! I already have my eyes on this super cute walker from John Lewis – Teddy is only 5 months so doesn’t quite need one yet but I cant wait to see him maurading about with this! A friend has it for her little girl and she loves it to bits x

I LOVE this walker Laura! Is it quite heavy so that they can lean on it without going flying? Or is it better for babies who are already fairly stable?
the website does say from 12 months plus but I’d be willing to try it earlier as when I’ve seen it in action it’s always seemed very sturdy x
Laura this is very cute! x
I watched a thoroughly interesting document on the BBC some months back about babies development and I was stunned at some of the things I discovered. I will try and find you a link. But in terms of the veg situation you have, Leo is much the same and according to this programme it is due to an inherent need to be cautious of potentially poisonous plants. Thus things that are green and leafy get approached with much more caution than most other foods. And also, lets be honest, they do taste naff. I found if I put some gravy on Leo’s veg or something to hide the green element a little he ate them much better (until he realised he was being duped and proceeded to feed them to the dog). I also discovered via this programme that babies knee caps don’t form until they are like 2?! Hence why they can crawl on the hardest floors in the world. How fascinating.
Nursery was amazing for introducing foods to Le that I would never have considered giving him. I walked in one day and he was munching on a croissant. I’d never even considered giving him one. He also eats much better at nursery and appears to be less fussy. Do you think I can get hi to eat a piece of cucumber at home?! Nope. But at nursery he scoffs the lot.
Hmmmm. Mabel is the same – maybe they persevere more?! Loving the idea of a croissant?! Although buying them would be dangerous…they are my favourite x
Tesco’s have a very cute cable knit mustard cardi- only size 12-18mnths left online but they might have some in store?? X
Hi Louise!
Thanks so much will take a look! there is a store just down the road x
The photos of Mabel are just gorgeous!
There is a cardigan available on the Next website. They’re calling it ochre but looks quite ‘mustard’ to me and is really sweet! So sorry I don’t know how to add a link but if you key in the stock number 671 277 it should come up and is in stock at the moment.
Enjoy your festive day in the Cotswolds!
Thanks so much Jenny will check this out too, I seem to be obsessed with mustard and brown at the moment?! As a kid I would have loathed these shades! Poor Mabel, I hope that when she looks back at photos she doesn’t think my choices were terrible (!) x
Teething is rubbish! Both my girls didn’t get teeth till really late (molly was 18 months!) but there doesn’t seem to be much that really helps. Anbesol is great or nelsons teething granules. In the day try freezing cucumber sticks, which doubles as a veg intake!! If you want her to have more fruit and veg get one of the those fruit net things so she can chew away but not get any lumps. Great thing although a pain to wash! Not brown shoes but M&S have some very cute mustard pram shoes. xx
Mustard pram shoes?! they sound amaze! Will definitely invest in the granules and the Anbesol, anything that will help her and take away some of the pain. x
Mabel is utterly gorgeous!
I also stuck by the ‘food is fun before 1’ thing and it made for a stress free weaning and beyond. I found lots of times it took a good 5-6 times offering the same thing and one day my little one would go for it and end up liking whatever it was, so keep at it!Its the best feeling ever watching them inhale their food with gusto, isn’t it!
Lauren you are right, sometimes I give up too easily – especially as I know if it’s pear or yoghurt she’ll eat it straight away! x
Mothercare have a mustard cardie for £10……
I second the anbesol recommendation! Leant some to our next door neighbour the other week after she was at her wits end having had a night of no sleep. She now swears by it! We found that on really bad days and nights baby neurofen was good (depending on how you feel about drugging them?!?!?) because it’s an anti inflammatory it reduces swelling around those little gums and seemed to help reduce the pain!
Also, my husband would like to thank you for reminding me how tough this stage is as I was getting broody (still am having seen how blooming adorable Mabel is but ssshhhhhh!)
I wouldn’t normally advocate spending large amounts of money on clothing children when they grow out of everything so flippin fast but as Christmas is coming and there’s really not that much we can buy Effie this year (she doesn’t have it all btw, she is just very happy with her iggle piggle and a cardboard box) so I’m getting her some Amy and Ivor baby moccasins, they are the cutest! They do them in tan, I’m toying with the blush pink colour as well but can’t decide. You will love them! Xx
P.s that Ella’s kitchen cheesy pie was a win in our house too! We’ve progressed to fish pie and peas but she’s obsessed with cheese! X
Baby Boden have a lush mustard cardi, we have it.
If you don’t already follow Courtney from Babyccino kids it’s a must! She has four children and dresses them beautifully, fab for ideas. Search for Courtney Adamo xxx
