I love travelling, but I loathe packing, often leaving it until the night before, sometimes even the day itself. This usually results in me having to run around whichever airport I’m flying out of desperately trying to find whatever it is I’ve already realised I’ve forgotten and can lead to some odd outfit combinations when I arrive. Over time I’ve learned some things I definitely don’t need to pack (heels being one, I’m a strictly flats girl on holiday) but there’s still room for improvement.

I just got back from a very last minute holiday to Formentera, a teeny island off the coast of Ibiza. We booked on the trip on the Thursday morning and flew on the Saturday at 5.30am. With Thursday and Friday at work there wouldn’t have been very much time for packing even if I did favour a more organised approach. After I’d made sure I’d remembered the essentials: passport, tickets, money, tech, chargers, adaptors and the current Rock My Style book club read (Sisterland by Curtis Sittenfeld btw) I basically threw all my summer clothes into the case and hoped for the best.
As so often happens I spent the majority of the holiday wearing the same couple of things on repeat: one of three bikinis (all completely different shapes and so the resulting tan lines have formed an interesting pattern on my back), jeans shorts (a destroyed pair for day and a smarter pair for evening) and a variety of tops. It turned out that I no longer like any of the dresses I’d packed and so I ended up buying a couple of patterned kaftan tops and an embroidered dress in Formentera to plug the evening wear gap (tip: try everything on before you give it case space!). I completely forgot to pack any jewellery or an evening bag and, despite packing three different nail polishes, I managed to leave the nail varnish remover pads I’d purchased as part of my big pre-holiday Boots shop on the floor in my front room. On the whole though I don’t think I did too badly with just 48 hours notice.
I frequently forget to pack workout gear and, when staying in a city, have ended up buying more which is annoying when I’ve got perfectly good kit at home. On this occasion I did remember to pack workout gear (yoga kit, having found a nearby hotel that offered drop in morning yoga classes, as well as running kit) but in the end I didn’t use any of it. The hotel we stayed at offered free bicycles for guests and so, instead of hiring a car or moped or relying on the bus, we travelled around the island using pedal power. As well as being a great way to explore, it meant that I felt as if I was getting enough exercise every day, it was supposed to be a holiday after all!
My sister Chrissi (a Virgo) is much more organised than me (she’s much more organised than most people tbh). She has what sounds like a complicated system of spreadsheets to ensure that she doesn’t forget a thing. While I’m not one for spreadsheets I do like a list and so, with the benefit of recent hindsight, I’ve written a packing list (see right or below, depending what type of device you’re reading this on). I figure I’ll always know where to find it for future trips and perhaps it will be useful for you too. I haven’t put numbers of tops, bottoms, dresses etc as obviously that depends on the destination and duration of the trip, not to mention what you’ll be doing when you get there. Of course in a perfect world all the tops, bottoms and shoes would work with each other to provide numerous outfit combinations, but avoiding that last minute dash around the airport would be an improvement on my current MO.
What’s your packing approach? Are you a last minute chuck-it-all-in type like me? Or an ultra-organised pack-ahead type like my sister? What do you always forget to pack? Any other packing tips? For a hot weather holiday I always have a top, shorts, flip flops and bikini in my hand luggage in case my checked in luggage goes missing. I frequently read that rolling clothes as opposed to folding them leads to fewer creases but I’ve never tried it myself. I’m bound to have forgotten something from the list, so do feel free to add anything I’ve missed in the comments section below!

Over the years I have travelled with work quite a bit, in addition to holidays, of course, and I now have it sussed I think. I still take too many clothes that I never wear when going of holiday, I think everyone is guilty of that, but the one thing I really really can’t live without is my “travel” toiletries supply. I have everything in mini form ready to go at a moment’s notice, along with basic medication (paracetamol, bite cream, plasters etc), plug adapters, sanitary products etc etc. It really makes everything else such a breeze. I just make sure when I get back from a trip that everything is returned to the same place and (if I am super organised – it rarely happens though) I make sure I fill up the little bottles as I put it all away, so I don’t have to fill them up quickly before throwing them in a bag.
I also always take a rubber door stop with me – work sent us on what I affectionately refer to as “spy training” when I first started my job, actually it was more about personal safety and security but it included some really useful advice. The one thing I still do is take this door stop – for girls travelling by themselves, all you do is put a rubber door stop under your door at night when you are alone, and if, god forbid, someone tried to get into your room, it gives you an extra few minutes before they can get through the door – enough time to escape/ hide/call security etc etc. I know it sounds drastic but it really does give me peace of mind! I definitely sleep better as a result.
On a less serious note though I highly highly recommend rolling clothes. I can’t attest to them arriving less creased, maybe I don’t roll things in the right way (?!), but it does mean you can pack an awful lot more in a small bag. x
Great tip with the door stop! Will certainly try to remember that one (if I remember to pack it…!)
Annie I’m totally stealing your always-ready-to-go travel toiletries/medications/misc stuff approach. Spy training, haha! I’ve never heard the door stop safety advice, but will use it on future solo trips, thank you for sharing. Ditto clothes rolling! x
PLEASE can you do a post on Formentera?! Did you see many couples with young kids there? I seriously want to go but not sure if it’s best kept to a girlie weekend trip rather than a family holiday with my 1 yr old!!!! Anyway, major weekend envy and great concise packing list – will be using this for our holiday, thank you xx
Pleasure Anna! There were lots of families with children of all ages in Formentera. Lots of lovely beaches, which did get busy, and sometimes the only close-by food options were quite pricey restaurants but on the last few days we got into the habit of picking up sandwiches on the way to the beach so we didn’t completely blow our budget. It would be good for a girlie weekend if you’re into spending the day at the beach, watching sunset at a low key beach bar and then going for dinner, as opposed to clubbing. I guess the only problem with a weekend is that you have to fly in to Ibiza, get a taxi to the ferry (about 15 mins), ferry to Formentera (half an hour), then a taxi or bus to wherever you’re going, all of which would eat into a two or three day trip. xx
Despite travelling three-four times a year with work, I am RUBBISH at packing for trips/holidays. We left for honeymoon at 5pm the day after our wedding and I kid you not… I was packing damp clothes straight out of the washing machine into plastic bags!! So disorganised! I am also no stranger to buying adapters and/or padlocks every time I turn up at the airport having been unable to locate previous purchases!
I’m the same with those airplane converter things for your headphones… I swear I should own about 15 of those little blights, but can I ever find one again!? I’ve left one in my “flight rucksack” now.. so fingers crossed for next time.
You have a flight rucksack Jo? I think I need one too…
Haha, so happy to hear I’m not the only one Maddy! I have bought so many padlocks over the years, I dread to think how much I’ve spent…
If it is a big two week summer holiday I start packing weeks in advance! It sounds very organised and I try to be ruthless by not putting things in the case I don’t need but usually end up having a last minute panic and throwing half my wardrobe in – of course I only end up wearing half of it.
I try to be sensible and start by laying my clothes out and seeing how I can mix and match outfits to try and keep the number of items down (always including an extra top and extra underwear as you never know when you might get delayed and need to stay extra night) and then work on keeping toiletries to a minimum, which is easier said than done.
I’m going to Sweden in August and even though it is just for a long weekend and the climate is pretty much the same as England in August I am already starting to mentally panic about what to take. I don’t know why leaving home for a few days sends such irrational thoughts through my head, it’s not like I’m going to outer Mongolia!
You’ve inspired me to be more organised ahead of my next trip Claire. Good luck with the prep for Sweden!
It’s not what to pack, but what to pack it in for me!
I have such a dull and old suitcase…know of any places I can invest in a beauty that will last me a good few holidays of at least 5 days?
Thank you!
Loads of love,
Charlie
