I like hats. Always have. I’ve worn a cowboy number every summer for years – protects your face from UVA/UVB related nasties and covers a sweaty barnet perfectly. More recently during the warmer months I’ve moved on to a straw trilby from The Kooples, that little bit smarter and I feel it is more of an ‘accessory” rather than something I throw on as part of my sun protection armour.
I have never worn a hat in winter. Unless you count the cosy bobble type I used to don for snowboarding holidays. Anything remotely knitted in style leaves me with the most unattractive static yet-at-the-same-time flat hair once I take it off, call me vain but it’s not a look I particularly favour.
In the world of fashion there seems to be all sorts of immense headwear action going on right now, my favourites are the felt/wool wide brimmed floppy style as seen on the model above taken from our recent Rock My Wedding shoot and the fedora. I’m just stuck with when you can in fact wear a rather statement hat without looking a bit of a wally aside from ladies day at Ascot, and when is the correct and sociably acceptable time for said hat to be taken off?
Say I wore the wide brimmed style to the shops, if I then went for coffee should I remove it?! Sitting down to eat a sandwich whilst wearing a rather large item on my bonce at the same time just seems a little…odd. What is the best thing to do with my locks so they look ok with a hat and not extraordinarily tragic without?
Do you like hats? Have you invested in one this season?
I was thinking that as per my consuming a sandwich statement, such a wide brim design might be quite useful for hiding the evidence of scoffing a rather large slice of Victoria sponge.
Happy Friday you lush lot you.
I never usually wear hats unless on holiday, when I HAVE to otherwise I will get the reddest scalp on the planet!!
Then Glastonbury happened and I bought a straw trilby I loved! I wore it all summer!
A few months ago I bought a gorgeous pink hat as I was possibly going to be dressing up as Toadette (from Mario Kart) for a hen do!!!! It didn’t happen but I did fall in love with the hat!!!

So this has become my winter hat. Have worn it a few times already. Sadly my hair is a bit of a nightmare too and does go a little crazy. My issue is the fringe!! I already suffer with a lovely cowslick and after hours of hat wearing my fringe ends up a ridiculous mess. I CANNOT be seen without a fringe therefore, currently I have only worn it places where I can keep it on all day! haha!
Am loving this wide brimmed number……one for the Christmas wish list maybe! 😉
Oh & would also be interested to know what people do with their hair, especially those with wispy, fine, flyaway hair!!
xx
ps. The Toadette costume…..I was going to cover the hat in cut out spots and then match it with a cute pink dress I have – would’ve been perfect!
Rebecca you look the cutest in this hat! Also about twelve. That’s a compliment by the way. I actually think this kind of hat really suits a fringe….
Hmm, perhaps I need a fringe so I can wear a hat?! x
I have picked this hat up soooo many times but put it down again. I worry I’ll look/feel like an idiot in!
I have it at home (well, props have to live somewhere!) but not worn it yet aside from in the house. I like you worry about the idiot association but they look so nice on everyone else, perhaps we just need to bite the bullet? x
I’m going to Edinburgh for new year maybe test spin it there?!? I think it requires a stylish outfit. Don’t that hat will go with boot cut jeans and converse. Does that sound mad? I’m thinking black skinny jeans and high healed black Chelsea boots ….. Oshea your turning out to be quite the bad influence on me x
Clare I absolutely agree, a hat requires a heel! I think Edninburgh is the perfect place to road test one 🙂 x
I’ll be sure to report back with my findings x
Have you noticed the amount of ‘day hatters’ in Zara of a weekend? It’s intense.
Yes!!! But they look so cool and Zara-esque (Obvs)
I am always super jealous. x
Hats look so ridiculous on me. I just about got away with a straw thing on honeymoon, but the woolly ones look alright I think. I’ve got quite a collection of winter hats I alternate between, as well as a hat/scarf all in one thing my friend nabbed me from Peter Jensen when he did work experience there on his fashion degree 🙂
A hat scarf all in one you say? this sounds very on trend Kitty. x
I don’t know about that, I’ve had it about 5 years! It’s really nice dark grey and the seams are stitched into points that look like cat ears!
I have the dilemma of what to do when I take it off, too! I have a cloche hat that I adore for winter (more grown up – in fact I wore it to impress on a first date with my now-fiancé) but a wooly hat is so much easier to scrunch up and stick in my handbag when I go inside (shops, bars etc) so I mostly leave it at home. Maybe I need a bigger handbag?!
Cat, I think this is the perfect excuse to buy yourself another bag 🙂 x
I do like a hat, and am lucky as I think they like me. But the dilemma of when to remove it, and the fact that any adverse weather conditions result in me running to shelter whilst clutching my head (soggy & windswept felt isn’t chic) mean I rarely embrace this accessory. how did they do it in the olden days?!
I’d love to wear a hat to a wedding (4 weddings and a funeral style) but, without a mobile hairdresser in tow, I think this is unlikely!
I think hats are a MUST for a wedding. The bigger the better I say. My friends may laugh, and I may struggle to drink champers. But hey ho. It’s not a wedding without a cracking hat!
That’s it, next time I go to a wedding I’m purchasing a special hat!
I’m a Hat person! My recent fave is a mustard felt floppy find. ( I frequently wear about 4 hats in winter)
My trick is to purchase hats slightly larger for your head, for example I have two man hats, they give less of a ring imprinted onto your hair. I also tend to wear hats to cover 2/3day old hair (mum of 2!) or over curls as they seem to take easier to the messy look when you do take your hat back off.
I’d take my hat off for dinner or if I’m going to be somewhere more than 45mins! Not for coffee though!
I am loving hats at the moment. Not sure how I missed this post!
