Earlier this year I was lucky enough to go to the Côte D’Azur aka The French Riviera on a 48-hour trip for Rock My Style and Rock My Wedding. I stayed at Le Mas Candille, a lovely hotel just outside the ridiculously pretty village of Mougins, which is between Cannes, home of the film festival and Grasse, the perfume capital of the world (see above for an aerial view of Mougins and click here for my post about the hotel for Rock My Wedding). Our itinerary was jam-packed, following are four of things I enjoyed most, all of which I think you’ll like too…
Go To Mougins Museum Of Classical Art
Even if you’re not particularly into art if you’re in the area this museum is a must visit. Founded by Christian Levett in 2011, the museum displays his private collection over four floors and what a collection it is, including as it does pieces by Ruben, Cézanne, Chagall, Matisse and Picasso (well if you’re going to collect art, go big or go home quite frankly, which is clearly Christian’s MO). However it isn’t just what’s displayed in the museum that makes it a must visit, it’s how it’s displayed. For example in a section that’s an ode to Venus, ancient sculptures of the goddess of love sit happily with modern perspectives from the likes of Klein, Warhol and Dali. Sounds bonkers. Is brilliant.
Learn To Create Perfume At Fragonard
Surely the ultimate experience for a perfume lover, at Fragonard – one of the most famous perfumers in France – you can learn all about eau de cologne and then have a go at mixing your own. Sadly I didn’t come away with the next Chanel No 5. In fact, shh, don’t tell anyone, but I didn’t really like my concoction. Perfume making is one skill I’m very happy to leave to the experts. If you’re as bad at making perfume as me there’s a shop selling all of Fragonard’s fragrances (including one called Miranda!), as well as numerous gorgeous gift sets for folks back home.
See How Sweets Are Made at Florian Confiserie
Florian Confiserie is like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory but for adults, a building where fruit is transformed into candies that taste like the original fruit turned up to eleven, flowers magically become crystalised sweets, liqueurs, syrups and jams, or are sprinkled over chocolate and nougat, and the chocolate tastes so good you’ll never buy another bar of Dairy Milk as long as you live. Take a tour to see how it’s done, then hit the shop and buy as much as you can carry. For gifts. Yeah. Right.
Have lunch At Plage Goeland
After a short stroll around Cannes, and with just a few hours to go before our flight, we ate the final meal of our trip at beachside restaurant Plage Goeland. A starter of smoked salmon and salmon carpaccio was followed by king prawns sautéed with butter, parsley and garlic, with endless rounds of just-out-of-the-oven bread and a glass (or two) of perfectly chilled wine. The sun came out. It was the perfect end to a super-chic couple of days.
I had such a wonderful time, I would love to go back and spend more time exploring the area. Have you ever been to the Côte D’Azur? What are your favourite things to do and places to go? Do share below!
I LOVE this area of France so much! We went last year as a quick break without ever really having done much research or planning, and it was absolutely amazing – so beautiful with loads to do! A couple of my friends have booked to go there this year, and I am so jealous. But my recommendation to both was to definitely do a wine tour, and to book with Raphael at Azur Wine Tours – he was so knowledgeable and friendly, and definitely not stingy with his measures! http://www.azurwinetours.com/
Also, if you go in July there is a jazz festival in Nice which is worth checking out
It really is beautiful isn’t it Jane?! I like the sound of the wine tour, obviously need to go back!
just got back from Antibes. we had a great time, the weather was just perfect (hot but not humid) and it was very family friendly. my favourite beach was at juan les pins – there are private beaches but the public beach is very nice too! next time I want to do day trips to Nice and Monaco.
Sounds wonderful Kathryn – adding it to the list of places I want to go!
I went to Nice and Cannes a few weeks ago. I enjoyed a perfume-making sesh at Fragonard too. I have to admit that I was more taken with the new homeware/clothing section in the Cannes store though! So. Many. Beautiful.Things
I’m loving the recommendations. I’m currently organising a hen party for a group of 5 in Cannes. Do any of you have any recommendations for an activity to do? Or any bars? I’ve checked out the wine tasting you mentioned but unfortunately the maximum size group they would take is 4 🙁 did any of you try a boat tour? Or any other wine bars? Any help would be much appreciated.
