If you read the first part of my holiday feature in Portugal a few weeks ago then you would probably be expecting the second – apologies for the delay folks, we put our home on the market last week, Mabel has started walking (more on both coming soon!) and everything in the O’Shea household has gone crazy bananas.
This section is all about the baby – what we took with us that was really useful and what I think you lovely lot of parents might find useful too. I’ve broken everything down into easy-to-follow sections and we’ve created a master pin to the right which details all of my favourite getaway essentials in one place.
You can imagine Becky’s “my job is super glamorous!” joy when I told her she needed to create a graphic with a giant blow up duck in it…

Travelling
On a last minute whim (literally on the day before our flight) I purchased this black washed rucksack from Next. Yes a rucksack. I am the least rucksack person I know. They remind me of water-logged camping trips. Or being twelve with a bad fringe and no fashion clue. Neither are events I wish to be reminded of.
However, I am now a bonfide fangirl of the rucksack. It was my BFF at the airport and on the plane in a “look at me no hands!” type of way. And believe me I needed both hands at all times.
In my rucksack I had our passports, make-up, iPad, phone, wipes, this awesome lunch bag (easy to scrunch up smaller and keeps things cool) with Mabel’s fruit and yoghurt in, spare dummy, extra cardigan for Mabel and various other bits and bobs. It’s actually a very soft imitation leather and dare I say it…..made me feel a little bit “Cool Mum knows exactly what she’s doing with this travelling lark” esque. Ahem.
James also had a larger hand luggage case from Antler which we always take to house heavier items such as a laptop, we took a few small toys in there, a book and Mabel’s nappies and cream in another smaller bag inside so we could easily take it back and forth to the loo for changing rather than her usual rather large changing bag we use at home (the best thing ever but far too cumbersome for a room the size of a broom cupboard.)
My allocated hand luggage was my stroller – the Babyzen Yoyo. I should write a separate review of this as I have so much to say but it is super light and easy to fold out and back again. The strap fits over your shoulder and it literally carries like a large square “tote” – it’s about 5KG in weight. I have the white chassis with the grey colour pack. We saw LOADS of them in Portugal. And we used it multiple times every single day.
One of the most super recommendations I gained from this helpful community was the iSafe Universal Car Seat Travel Bag. Not only did we take our car seat in it but also enough wipes, regular nappies and swim nappies to last us the holiday and none of it counted as weight towards our regular luggage allocation. (For those of you that don’t know – we certainly didn’t, you take this particular bag to the oversized luggage area at the airport where folks take golf clubs and the like.)
Eating
We didn’t check there was one or request a highchair for our apartment. Epic parental fail number one. Luckily based on the tips from you folks we had invested in this booster seat which was a life saver. Most places we went out to eat had highchairs but a few didn’t and there was one occasion where there was none left – we took this with us in the boot of the car wherever we went just in case.
I packed the equivalent of 7 Ella’s Kitchen “evening” meals as I was unsure what would be available whilst away, how fussy Mabel would be etc etc. I have to say the couple of supermarkets we went to really didn’t have any baby food, most surprising. Mabel mainly had toast and fruit for breakfast, sandwiches, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, grated carrots and yoghurt for lunch and one of the organic pre-prepared pouch meals in the evening plus a few snacks (banana, Heinz biscotti, raspberries, blueberries etc) throughout the day. Every evening meal we let her try some of ours with mixed success. At least good old Ella’s Kitchen ensured she didn’t go hungry and we didn’t have to worry about her just eating bread and fruit all day.
In The Sun
Mabel’s skin is very sensitive to suncream so I can’t really recommend a certain brand unfortunately – we are still road testing as many as we can to find the “one”. The best thing ever was this SPF 40 strawberry print suit from John Lewis. I had another which wasn’t anywhere near as good quality – I wish I’d jut bought two of these.
On various recommendations we also took with us this inflatable safety duck bath from Boots. It came in very handy by the pool as Mabel could splash about in it and the water warmed up fairly quickly. I would say it would be even more relevant to smaller babies who are not quite mobile yet – At 13 months Mabel did attempt to try and get out after ten minutes or so. The most useful toy we found were these ELC Nesting eggs from Boots. Lightweight, compact and very reasonably priced and good for learning/throwing about in the water.
Fashion wise Mabel mostly wore these cute shorts and the mix and match vests from Next. I also bought this thin ditsy print cardigan that matched for evening – it is very pretty and went really well with a lot of her denim pieces too.
My favourite outfit for Mabel was a light long sleeved floral print set with matching bloomers from Autograph at M&S that has now unfortunately sold out (Boo. Hiss.) but I do have my eye on this version that comes complete with lovely knitwear! Autograph is spendy but great quality I find.
Sleeping
It was REALLY hot in Portugal – 35 degrees some days. James and I take heat waves wherever we go, it’s not even funny anymore (we are very much non-sunbathing types.) For bedtime all Mabel had on was either a short sleeved vest or a shorts and T-shirt style pyjama set.
She slept in a 1 tog sleeping bag that we took with us, the aircon was almost permanently on so it was reasonably cool inside the apartment – we have this design from John Lewis.
For naps during the day we took along a black out shade with SPF 50 for the stroller but found Mabel mainly fell asleep in the car, on return from an outing we then took her out of the car very carefully in her car seat so that she could remain in the land of nod for an hour or so in the apartment. That meant James and I could spend some leisure time just us. Bonus.
Do let me know if you found this feature useful and anything else you can recommend as a baby holiday essential to parents, I’m sure there must be things I’ve forgotten…..
And if you have any questions on the items in the post then just holler in the comments section 🙂
Now the first holiday is over I’m definitely feeling more confident about the next!

I’m glad you mentioned the Babyzen… I’m in the midst of pram shopping (I say midst, I’ve hardly started). Do you think it is too flimsy to use from newborn? I know it has an insert meaning you can but wondered what your thoughts were? I want a lightweight easy pushchair that’s not ludicrously expensive to use from birth and am lost in the minefield of travel systems, strollers, prams, pushchairs etc…. Thanks!
Victoria, we have a Baby Jogget Summit which is a bit off road bonkers, but their City Mini is brilliant, light, easy to fold and not too speedy- have a look. Hope you are enjoying being pregnant, little ones are amazing!
Jogger. And spendy. Stupid phone.
Ah thanks so much for the tip Lucy – another one to add to the list to roadtest round Mothercare/JL!
If we have another baby Victoria then I will definitely use it from newborn and buy the newborn pack (it’s an extra £80 I think). It’s not suitable for rough terrain (!) but 99% of the time we’re on a pavement anyway – it’s really down to what your lifestyle requirements are x
Thanks Charlotte that’s really useful to know. I reckon for off-roading I’d stick the baby in a pouch anyway so I’m not too bothered about a 4×4 buggy. At least that’s what I’m thinking at the moment…
Charlotte I could kiss you. We booked to take little miss Silvie to Italy this summer last week- she will be 18 weeks old when we go and I am bricking it!! We have got a light stroller that’s suitable from birth (I don’t think the BabyZen is?), an inflatable pool seat and a SPF suit… But that’s it! I will now be getting the car seat case and abandoning my change bag for a trusty rucksack.
A piece of advice stolen from a mum on a plane- wear your baby in a wrap or carrier onto the plane! They will be comfy and feel safe and you have hands free- it is genius. Or even better get Daddy to do the wearing
One question. Where did Mabel sleep? We just picked up a Hauck Travelcot in the Aldi baby event but I am worried that Madam will be unimpressed and pine for her co sleeping crib….
Thank you!
Hi Lucy!
The apartment had a travel cot (we requested it – just failed on the high chair!) but most nights she woke up and just slept in our bed x
Rucksacks are my saviour! After a failed trip to the farm with a very heavy nappy bag (including picnic) on one arm and a very heavy 18 month old on the other (she was walking but was still quite clingy and like to be picked up), the next day I invested in a rather lovely tan, real leather rucksack from Next and haven’t looked back! I wear it every time I’m out with my little one and every time I feel smug! 🙂
Lucy I am inclined to invest in a more long term style rucksack, especially as Mabel becomes increasingly heavier to lug around with a bag on the other shoulder x
When I went to Menorca with my friend and her 7.5 month old, we bought one of those inflatable rings that they sit in for the pool (sort of like a jumperoo). She wore a swim nappy, onesie/wetsuit type thing plus insulated vest type thing and OMG, she LOVED it. Like, cried when we took her out, loved it. It was about 8 euros. best 8 euros we spent the whole holiday
Hi Claire, we had one of those too but Mabel didn’t like it (!) isn’t it funny?! she’s quite a bit older though so anything that makes her stay in one place is frustrating for her I think – she just wants to crawl/walk everywhere. Hopefully when she’s older still she’ll appreciate having a laze about in the pool more! x
Both my little ones have had reactions to most suncreams, including really expensive organic ones! But total success with Super Drug own brand (called Solait) baby sensitive factor 50 cream – no reaction at all, and it is really cheap because it is often on offer (which would usually put me off but it works so well I have never looked back)! Thought that might help – good luck xx
Thanks so much for the tip Emma, will definitely check that one out. We’ve got Eucerin left to try out (fingers crossed!) but if it’s a no go then this one will be next on the list! x
Just to say we are currently in Portugal and we’ve had lunch today at The Shack as per your recommendation on your previous post, it was so lovely, thank you for the tip! Isla is loving her hols and eating out in new places! x
Angela I am so jealous! pleased you enjoyed it xx
Great post Charlotte! Your holiday sounded amazing
We’ve taken Samuel (9 1/2 months old) to Majorca and to mainland Spain so far and agree that sun suits are literally lifesavers. Re: sleeping, I’ve heard that JoJo Maman Bebe do a light sheet / muslin type grobag for sleeping in hot temperatures. Yet to try one but my friends swear by them.
Also, a tip for flying, if you have babies, milk feed them (boob or bottle) on take off and landing as it helps equalise the pressure in their ears – we can make our ears pop but littles can’t!
Lucy – really don’t panic about taking babies away, it’s surprisingly easy if you’re organised. I was dreading flying with Sam but airports and airlines literally can’t do enough to help you – they bend over backwards to make sure you’re happy and settled as happy babies means a happy flight for everyone else! X x
Talulah you are absolutely right about the airline – Monach were super helpful.
Thanks for the tip on the muslin grog, will take a look x

This is my second baby and this post is still massively useful. We love going to vale do lobo and are going back in September. Would love to hear what places you found best there. In terms of sun cream have you tried ultrasun factor 50? It’s pricey but amazing. Only need to apply once a day and it actually works. My boys are super fair and despite being in the sea and pool they haven’t burnt and doesn’t seem to have caused a reaction. Thanks for tips
Hi Lucy! Yes we tried Ultrasun, the high alcohol content didn’t cause eczema but exacerbated her existing dry skin unfortunately. Lots more to try though so fingers crossed! x
Hi Charlotte, after your last post I’ve managed to convince the hubby too book Vale Do Lobo for next year! On the sun cream front Edie has super sensitive skin along with very bad eczema, most sun creams bring her out in red angry hives, in desperation I tried Aldi’s own Extra Sensitive Kids 50+ and no hives (yeay!) plus it’s super cheap at about 3 quid! might be worth a shot for Little Miss M! X
Hi Danielle! Oh yes definitely worth a shot! thanks! Yay on the Vale Do Lobo convincing, you will have a super time! x
my essential for a beach holiday is talc! gets sand off like no ones business. I stand David somewhere clean and dry, strip him off and squirt with talc. then the sand just falls off! it’s amazing.
my other tip is to visit a poundshop and stock up on some small toys which you can take out when needed.
Great tip Kathryn! we had sand everywhere 🙂 x
I really like Toddler Milk by SunSense. Its an Australian brand but you can buy it on Amazon. It goes on like a body lotion so not at all heavy or greasy and you dont have that horrible need to wash your hands after applying!
Thanks for the tip Kirsty! There are still quite a few brands left to try, I’m hoping at least one is ok! x
We’ve just taken my 8 month old to Florida! Yes we survived 2 x 9 hour flights with success! Tips from me – take your sling/carrier for the plane esp as we couldn’t pick the stroller up after security, carrying a 21lb boy for 1 hour wouldn’t have worked! Snooze shade for pram was great, as was the gro blackout blind that sticks to any window! We got a totseat which is a cloth portable high chair the size of a purse, dummy and toy clip, spare remote and baby wipes kept him entertained on the plane, we booked him a seat for the extra room so if you can afford defo worth doing for a long flight! Lots of snacks and a push chair that reclines!! As for time difference we got him on routine soon as we go there and he did beaut! X
