Happy New Year Loves! I am so looking forward to sharing my tales of motherhood with you all throughout 2015, your advice and feedback was so positive and helpful last year, I really can’t thank you all enough.
I am a bit “late” preparing this post – the night before publication, unlike my school homework (!), I do endeavour to finish features at least a couple of days in advance (notice the use of the word endeavour) yet here I am…running behind schedule. And you know what? it’s fine, really. If I’ve learnt anything in 2014 it’s been that the role of being a Mama doesn’t run to schedule, try as you might. Yes, being super organised helps – sometimes a great deal when juggling a business and a newborn, but you can’t second guess anything, it’s truly impossible to predict what your baby may or may not do from one moment to the next.
Don’t beat yourself up about it.
You can only do the best that you can do. And that’s plenty good enough.
As you read this my husband is driving Mabel around the block in the vain hope that she will fall asleep, that’s been the biggest change over the last few weeks – there appears to be no routine. I put this down to a combination of things, one being she has all of a sudden “found her voice”, literally non stop chatter, whilst her sing-song patter is very entertaining and extraordinarily cute, it can also be rather exhausting. Especially at midnight. I also think we have done so much over the festive period, a cinnamon scented whirlwind of friends, family, laughter and colour, that no wonder she’s up until the small hours, she doesn’t want to miss out!
Apart from the unsettled rest, Mabel is developing well, she appears to understand some simple commands and points at all sorts of items awaiting response on what that object might be. On this subject, I invested in a large alphabet print from This Modern Life a couple of months ago which Mabel LOVES, we are now unable to leave her nursery without going through the whole “A is for….”
It’s lots of fun and her continual amusement makes my day.
Mabel now has six teeth (!) which has meant that weaning is progressing at speed, she enjoys three meals a day (ALWAYS followed by pudding) and feeds herself various snacks with ease and a reasonable amount of mess. I have left the house with organic fruity puff in my hair on more than one occasion. I find the painter type bibs from Ikea excellent for preventing half-chewed mush ending up on Mabel’s clothes, and they are only £3.50 for two.
I thought the sales in terms of baby wear were amazing, particularly John Lewis – I find the clothing great quality but usually that little bit too spendy, I invested in five or six pretty dresses including this coral striped number (I paid full price for the navy and pink version in 6-9 months). Apologies in advance that there is now only newborn, 0-3 and 3- 6 month sizes left online (do check your local store though, ours in Solihull had plenty of pieces in a wide range of sizes still left at the weekend).
I also bought the teal cord pinafore dress and these soft knitted trousers.
The GAP was also generous in terms of discounts (I invested in quite a few 12-18 month sizes) and this organic tree print pram blanket is gorgeous quality, plus would work for either a boy or girl. Apparently it’s a “Christmas” tree print but I don’t see why particularly, I like it regardless.
In other news, Christmas dinner for 11 was a success! I would be fibbing if I didn’t admit the serving aspect wasn’t a little stressful, there was just so much food?! but because the plates were literally scolding to the touch everything stayed hot. Hoorah!
However, Mabel decided that just before everyone sat down she quite fancied a kip. And thus proceeded to miss the entire event. Even the cheese board.
Yep, Mabel’s first Christmas was spent in the land of nod. You know how I was saying you can’t second guess anything….?
As always, do share your thoughts (particularly ideas on how we might possibly get her to sleep before I turn into a pumpkin) and baby sales bargains in the comments box below.
Here’s to a prosperous and joyous 2015 you lovely lot you.
P.s if you want to know a little more about the team and our adventures in the media you can have a butchers at our new company website www.rockmyltd.com
Happy 2015! Ahhh love your JL sale purchases, I’ve ordered a few bits from there too but sadly missed most of the good stuff! I am excited about this vest for spring / summer though… http://www.johnlewis.com/donna-wilson-for-john-lewis-baby-cloud-print-bodysuit/p1492262?colour=Pink
I’m no sleep expert but we made the transition to cot just before Christmas and I got serious about the whole bedtime routine thing (I hadn’t bothered much before) so we now do bath, pyjamas and sleeping bag then into her dark room with Ewan the dream sheep on (!) for last feed and she is responding really well now and seems to know that it’s sleep time as soon as she’s in her pyjamas! My main issue is getting her to stay asleep for longer than 3 hours at a time… I’m contemplating buying this but it’s pricey so struggling to decide… It has such good reviews though! http://www.johnlewis.com/sleepyhead-grand-pod-pristine-white-8-36-months/p1399456
We also started weaning in December but she’s not showing much interest at all, she’s barely eaten anything! Any tips?! X
Hi Sarah! I think we need to get back in that bedtime routine (we were doing similar – it just got to the stage where in the dark room stage she would start shouting!)
LOVE the cloud print suits, did you see these? http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-woodland-jersey-bodysuits-pack-of-2-multi/p1397569
Amazing quality and so cute – I like them under pinafore dresses with a cardigan.
The key with Mabel was just very smooth fruit, her favourite was Ella’s Kitchen pear, anything with any kind of texture for the first month or so she would just spit it out, even very whizzed up banana (I tried, several times!)
The pear is almost like water so she took to it well x
Happy new year! I’m glad to hear your Christmas feast went to plan, it looked incredibly stylish, not that I would expect anything less
Sorry the rest of my message didn’t post.
Sorry about that Louise, Happy New Year to you! x
I think it’s pretty common for routine to go out the window at Christmas! she will probably adjust as you go back to your normal schedule.
I’ve been organised and bought my 2 year old a coat for next winter but that’s about it because we spent too much on Christmas. it was amazing though so totally worth it.
Oooh Kathryn which coat? I missed out on a lovely Parka from Zara. Her current coat only goes up to 12 months (March) but I didn’t consider next winter, good idea! x
We went through a similar situation with Sofia, at 9 months she suddenly started waking several times a night and took a ridiculous amount of rocking to get her to sleep. It lasted a week or two then she went back to normal. We had the same at 12 months just before xmas. I read that they have a sleep regression at around that age, which I guess makes sense with everything they are learning. Way too exciting to sleep. I would suggest stocking up on the coffee and try not to stress, it won’t last long. Good luck, I hope she sleeps soon. Xx
Ah there it is! That’s really interesting, thanks for the tips – that would make sense too. It was literally on Xmas Eve – she just became ever so active all of a sudden!
I’m having a coffee right about now…. x
Hi Charlotte, firstly I have to say how gorgeous Mabel is…she’s such a happy little lady! We have had an amazing 2 weeks with loved ones but lost all sense of routine over christmas too and I think our little lady knew daddy was going back to work this morning as she cried for four hours solid last night. I resorted to pacing in circles around our lounge so I feel your pain!! I agree with Sarah, I need to get back into a nightly routine. Good luck! I’ve been scouring the JL website and have only bought gifts for other babies so far… Will be seriously tempted to spend some pennies today now! Can I just ask what camera you use as your photos are so lovely? Thanks xx
Hi Laura! so glad you had such a lovely Christmas! Mabel was very subdued this morning, it doesn’t help that she didn’t go to nursery the week before Xmas either as she had a streaming cold. I’m hoping she doesn’t forget how much she enjoys it!
The images above are actually taken on my iPhone 6 (The camera is REALLY good) I then use an app (Vsco) to edit, I’m not a fan of filters per se but you can up the exposure and remove shadows subtly and well.
I used to use a Nikon D90 SLR (which I’m selling) and buying a Fuji XC2, the Nikon is that bit too large for me to carry around what with baby paraphernalia too and the Fuji is more of a “point and shoot” but with excellent picture quality and the ability to buy fancy lenses should you want to.
Sorry – waffled on about cameras there rather a lot! x
Don’t apologise for waffling…that’s great camera advice thank you!! Maybe you should do a post on photography 😉 Hope Mabel’s first day back at nursery is a success and finger’s crossed she’s nicely tired out later and goes to sleep well for you tonight! xx
Happy New Year RockMyStyle! Charlotte – I so love seeing your pictures of Mabel, she’s absolutely gorgeous and always dressed to impress! I’m 5 months pregnant and we don’t know what we’re having, but if we get a girl then Mabel will most definitely be her style icon! Also I find it totally inspiring as someone who is – being very honest because I don’t feel like you’re allowed to say it out loud – struggling with my changing shape, that you look so fantastic so quickly after having Mabel. That’s not to say I’m doing anything daft and not eating properly or the likes, but I just find it odd just now as my bump has finally appeared to see my body in such a totally way. I’m sure I’ll get used to it. And I like to think that there’s no reason I can’t look fab like you post baby! Anyway – thanks for these posts. I love them, and I love your honesty x
Hi Lisa! Hope your pregnancy is going well, I found the 5 month mark a little bit scary as that’s when I kind of had a bump but not fully – I wasn’t sure how to dress. I definitely felt more comfortable in tight tops/dresses to show it off and if there is a “next” time I would go tighter sooner (if that makes sense)
I was going to do a body update next week actually so stay tuned! Thanks so much of the compliments, I look much better in clothes than out of them but at 9 months post pregnancy I’m starting to see my “old” self again. There is nothing wrong in not absolutely loving your new shape or being worried about your changing body, we should all support each other in our concerns.
Promise you will get used to it soon, at 6 months I felt good and determined to still wear shorts….with tights! x
Our New Years resolution is to start the bedtime routine properly for nearly 5 month Samuel. The problem is, he tends to fall asleep at about 6pm of his own accord and then wakes anywhere between 7.30 and 1am – very hard to know how to settle him for the best when that happens!
Mabel may have napped through Christmas dinner, Samuel chose to produce a poo-nami as the husband was plating up Christmas dinner for 6! Perfect timing little man! God bless babies, they have a perfect sense of timing, right?!
Happy new year to you all, hope the coming year is happy, healthy and prosperous x x x
Hi Tallulah! Mabel is doing that too – wanting to fall asleep at about 5/6pm and then wakes up at 7.30 ready to play…..she then doesn’t want to sleep until much later!
Trying to keep her awake is easier said than done, she can get really upset – when she wants a kip she wants a kip!
Bless Samuel, his timing was amazing! x
Happy New Year everyone! 🙂
Loving your updates Charlotte… with Niema only a few weeks younger I love reading your posts as someone at a very similar stage. We’ve had an incredibly vocal little lady this week too… last night she was singing and grinning and playing hidy-boo until 11pm… I couldnt even bring myself to put such a happy thing to bed! It’s lovely this stage when they get so much more interactive!
Ahh I’ve done so much stocking up in the sales… is it too ridiculous to have a few things for her when she’s 3?! The lady in John Lewis was even laughing at me buying birthday Pjamas for my boy for 6 months time…?! I’ve stocked up on dresses for home, dresses for her days when I’m at work so that my mum has a regulated clothing selection (she has a tendency to dress my children in dreadful things while I am at work) and the gap sales just keep on going so I’ve found lots of goodies in there. http://www.gap.co.uk/browse/product.do?vid=1&pid=000988529000 This one is one of my faves but was sitting in my basket for a few days and when I popped in store I found it sitting there for just £7.99!
How funny that you shop in Solihul… and also are all things weddings… Thats where I lived when I was engaged and the John Lewis in Solihul, for me, is completely a memory of wedding list scanning and make up trials. Me and that Chanel counter…wow. I think I spent more than my anual salary there …in the space of 4 months.
Pah ha ha Amanda! I already bought this is 12-18 months! also the denim Henley dress. Although I didn’t get it for 7.99?! lucky you!
I love the Chanel counter in Solihull! the ladies are lovely – I bought both Becky and Miranda’s “big” birthday gifts from there! x
@Charlotte – Have you seen GAP’s New Utility collection? I feel like you’d want to buy ALL THE THINGS for Miss Mable!
http://www.gap.co.uk/browse/category.do?cid=1006936&departmentRedirect=true#department=166
Oh no Lynsey! Now I NEED the yellow cord dress?! x
I went a bit mad in the GAP sale too, for my 2yo. Also, The White Company had some beautiful baby PJs on offer (down to under £10!) and I picked up all sorts of bits in the Joules sale, including a waterproof all in one (of the sort that JoJo sell) for £20 reduced from £45. When she was small, I tended to shop in the seasonal sales for 6 mo ahead – so if it was the winter sales held in Jan, I’d buy on the basis that it was winter clothing she’d be in in October/November time, and get something 6mo older than she was then. Works well, as long as you don’t forget where you put it away ‘safely’!
Ha ha ha Sara good tip! I “found” an entire outfit for 3-6 months yesterday, gutted Mabel never got to wear it!
Are u in a routine with mealtimes/milk/naps makes a big difference to how our 8month old little boy sleeps also a few weeks a go he started waking at 5 but we think he was cold he’s now back in his really cosy gro bag and that’s made a difference. But as soon as he hit 6 months we implemented controlled crying and after 2 nights he self settles brilliantly. Its all just trial and error though really to find what works best for you x
Hi SaraJane, we were in a routine of sorts, we are going to try and get back into it now. Mabel often gets too warm it seems, it’s quite difficult to control the temp at the moment I find. I am rubbish with letting Mabel cry – it breaks my heart! x
I really enjoy your update posts. My little girl is almost 16 months old so it’s great to hear about the things other working mummies go through. I’m now back at work full time in a fairly full on job (accountant) with my hubby taking on the role as stay at home dad. It’s not what we originally planned but seems to be working. Plus Amelie has a number of health problems due to her being premature so it’s actually worked out well. Plus they both love it!
Random Q… Do you use your phone to take your pictures? I have an iPhone 4S and find the picture quality to be pants!
And well done for Christmas Day. We had 8 and a 3 month old last year. It was actually a lot of fun!
Hi Sarah, I use my iPhone 6 yes, I think the camera is great – much better than the 5! x
Happy new year! Thanks for these posts, I loved them and it’s always reassuring to know other mums are going through similar stuff! Isla is just under 8 months and we are very lucky as she’s always been a good sleeper but in the last few weeks routine for us has gone out the window too! Last night was a particular highlight, she woke every hour on the hour from 9pm-5am! Like you, I think she’s just over excited from christmas and lots of visitors, plus we just got back from australia 3 weeks ago which has obviously def affected her sleep! Let’s hope things get better soon but these things just happen, Isla has started to become vocal too, it’s lovely!
Great sale buys, I bought those dresses from JL too! x
Mabel was much better last night Angela! slept right through – fingers crossed for Isla x
Happy New Year. Mabel is just gorgeous!
I have just used a lady called Judy Clarke from Babywinkz to get my 5 month old daughter Ottilie to sleep – I couldn’t face another 2 years of no sleep like my little boy. We started on the Saturday after christmas with a baby that was either up wide awake form 12-5 or feeding every 1-2hrs. She would not go down in her cot at bedtime and I was scared to drive I was so tired – my children were literally tag teaming the wake ups. Anyway Judy was recommended to me and I was totally desperate and this was/is without doubt the BEST £275 i have ever spent in my life – in 10 days Ottilie went from non sleeper to sleeping 6:30-6:30 8:45-9:30 and 11:30-1:30 in her cot its incredible, the dummy has gone and been replaced with a bunny blanket. She feeds regular times of day and goes into her cot actually excited to go to bed!! Its by no means an easy solution, I am a total control freak mummy but I had to start working again this week and I couldn’t do that on the limited sleep. Its not cry it out but I won’t lie crying was involved – I had to get my husband to do the first night I found it so hard but its worth it as she has pretty much slept through from night 3 and if she does wake she seems able to self settle in 10 mins. If this helps even one person its worth telling I think she is a miracle worker.
xoxo
Hi Charlotte we had fun at Christmas with teething commencing so Matilda was a bit if a yoyo bless her, happy whilst chewing Sophie or calpol was working then crying her eyes out in pain, no teeth yet! She is 51/2 months now so younger than Mabel but when we had big troubles getting her to sleep in the day I found the baby whisperer boom a god send. As with all baby books take what you will from it but the sleep section we found really useful. Hope Mabel is back sleeping again soon.
Baby whisperer book even!
