I still have no idea where I’m going to be and what I’m going to be doing on New Year’s Eve (please tell me I’m not the only one?!). Reader Suzy is way more organised than me and is swapping New Year in Blighty for five days in the beautiful Czech capital of Prague, the second part of her two part honeymoon (two honeymoons? lucky lady!).
The flights and a hotel in the Old Town are already booked so Suzy and her husband are after recommendations for things to do and restaurants to eat at whilst they’re there. Over to Suzy…
{Suzy’s Request}
My husband and I are going to Prague for five days for the second part of our honeymoon (part one was a lazy all-inclusive week in Lanzarote!) with New Year’s Eve falling in the middle of our trip. We’ve never been on a city break together before and neither of us has ever been to Prague. We’re looking forward to exploring a new city and spending New Year’s Eve somewhere different. We’ve booked a hotel in the Old Town. My husband is a home-brewer and really into craft beers so he’s looking forward to sampling different beers and visiting a brewery or two. I’m excited that the Christmas market will still be on over New Year – it’s one of the reasons we chose Prague. We’d love restaurant recommendations and suggestions for things to do when we’re there.
Thanks, Suzy
It’s around 15 years since I visited Prague and I don’t remember very much about the trip other than that it was VERY cold, so I can’t help. Here’s hoping you can!
What are the must-see sights in the city? Which are the best bars, beers and breweries for Suzy’s craft beer loving husband? Which restaurants would you recommend? Any must-buys at the Christmas market? Where should Suzy and her husband see in New Year? If you can help, please leave a comment below.
Right, I’m off to look at flights out of here…

Can you do one of these for me please? I’m going to Edinburgh with the husband from 29th Dec to 2 Jan and don’t know where to start?!?!x
Ah, what a romantic honeymoon/new years! I went to Prague about 7 years ago (my friend has his 21st there…felt a bit of a let down inviting him to my pirate themed bar crawl in comparison…) so I can’t remember any specific restaurants, but a must on the list is to go to the top of Petrin Hill – the views of Prague and stunning and there’s an observatory tower up there too. Maybe take a bottle of bubbles up there and while away a few hours (wrap up warm though!!). You can either take the funicular up or it’s a do-able walk too. Have a fantastic time x
JAZZ BOAT! I can’t even say how much I loved this! Booked it as a treat for the boyf but we both really enjoyed it.
You can book just a seat (at cute tables) or go for the 3 course dinner (we did and the food was great). Get to the right bridge to meet the boat and enjoy wonderful music, great food and a reasonable bar for two hours.

Almost the best thing we did when we went in Oct 2012, there are free tours too. Red tshirts but unhelpfully I can’t remember their name.
The idea is that you only pay what you think it’s worth at the end. We learnt loads about lots of areas of inner city Prague, so much interesting history! Only do that on a day when you think you can walk far and be standing for long-ish periods. We were knackered by the end of it.
Prague is one of my favourite European cities. Visiting over the festive season is one of my favourite things and I’m sure New Year will be amazing! I agree with the suggestion of Petrin Hill – views over the city. The markets are a must, for eating would suggest steering clear of the places on the square but venture a few streets back and there’s some great finds. There’s also a restaurant on a boat but I can’t remember the name of it (sorry!) but it has great views over the river.
Lokal and The Beer Museum are both fairly centrally located and for a man who likes his beers, they’d be great.
Have a fantastic time!
Thanks for the suggestions, I’m starting to get excited now! We definitely want to do a boat tour so I’ll be suggesting the Jazzboat to Dave tonight. That might be a good idea for our first night in Prague. I hadn’t heard of Petrin Hill but I’ll definitely put that on our to-do list too, I think I’d have to be lazy and use the funicular!
I went to Prague about 9yrs ago now, it really is a beautiful city. I would love to go back! If you want to do cultural stuff, the Jewish Museum is a must. It documents the Czech Republic’s journey through the Holocaust. It is incredibly moving and will stay with you for life. But it is well worth it. 🙂
