Theresa’s Global Inspired Home Tour

It’s been a while since we had a home tour and this one is a corker. Also folks, it has floor plans which we know you’ve been asking for! I’ll hand you over to Theresa to take you on a tour of the downstairs of her home.

I moved in to my Edwardian three-bed terrace in the historic area of Bournville in Birmingham in 2013. I was a single mum at the time with my 11 month old son Arlo. I wanted an easy to move in to home that needed minimal work. As this house had been completely gutted and renovated by a developer in recent months it was the perfect blank canvas for us but still had beautiful period features that I love. Fast forward two years and I met my now husband Tom. He sold his Cheltenham house to move up to Birmingham with us, the day he moved in I found out I was pregnant with our daughter Anais so we decided to use the profit from his house sale to extend and convert the loft space to create an extra bedroom and office space for me and an extra bathroom for guests.

Living Room

The walls are Dulux Clouded Pearl Matt Emulsion. The shutters I had installed by Hilary’s Blinds to try and camouflage the ugly UPVC windows and also to add some period style that would be in keeping with the rest of the house. The sofa is from Furniture Village and had to be chopped in half to remove it from Tom’s period cottage in Cheltenham! Luckily he put it back together and it is still standing (although a tad creaky at times!) and the wndow seat also built by my handy husband. For other sources, the cupboard was a bargain eBay find and the armchair was from Swoon Editions. The chandelier is vintage and Venetian style mirror also an ebay buy. On the floor, the rug was from Modern Rugs UK and the black Chinese style chest was from Oka.

Kitchen

The kitchen features an extension which was carried out by the developer who renovated the property. The units are Ikea while the large display shelf was built by my husband from scaffold board. The splashback tiles are from Tons of Tiles. The dining table is from RCC furniture and the chairs, church pew and wooden filing cabinet are all either eBay finds or vintage.
The magazine wall rack is from Ikea. The mix of art in the large gallery wall is a collection of my own illustrations and paintings, family’s work and artists I’ve discovered through Instagram such as Tipperley Hill. The neon sign is from Light Up North. Another prominent feature in the kitchen is my large blackboard wall using Homebase chalkboard paint. It’s a space that I use to experiment with illustrations and add different drawings throughout the year to add seasonal interest to the space or just a fun drawing for my children to enjoy!

Snug

The walls are painted with Dulux Chalk Blush emulsion. When our loft was converted this room which used to be my home office became our family snug, with a large L shaped sofa from Loaf home and large internet TV (my husband’s only request!) which is (I think!) cleverly hidden by a large canvas on the wall which can be simply lifted on and off to watch TV. I wanted a calm Scandi/Moroccan vibe in here with lots of wicker and vintage wooden furniture. Everything in here bar the sofa is from eBay or second-hand shops. The wicker shade and woven pouffes used as a table are both from Ikea.
