My lovely friend Lisa is currently expecting and is absolutely blooming at 24 weeks. When I featured my own maternity style it was very much winter time so I thought it might be useful to cover something a little more summery that will also see you into Autumn. As well as having a butchers at Lisa’s fashion choices please use the comments section to make suggestions and recommendations for current season maternity pieces and accessories.
Lisa {24 Weeks} My dramarama for Summer clothes for my 24 weeks pregnant self started a couple of weeks ago when I had to find something suitable for a Christening, not only to fit okay with a bump and look lovely but I was also the photographer so I needed something comfy but still look smart.
I didn’t realise it would be such a mission! After trawling through Topshop, Asos, River Island and Boohoo websites to name a few, I somehow racked up a bill of about £700, with the intention of sending most of this back (and believe me – pretty much all of it went back). How on earth do they make these tent-like dresses look nice in the photographs?! Honestly it was hilarious.
Anyway, I managed to find a few nice bits of attire but my best bit of advice would be to check out what you already have in your wardrobe. Anything stretchy can work and it can save you a fortune. These are a few of my favourite things – old and new for the Summer time, special occasions and work. I’ll be sure to be looking at Charlotte’s Winter Maternity essentials when the sun starts to disappear though.
Outfit 1
This is my staple work outfit. In fact I arrived to Charlotte’s in it. I love it because I can get away with wearing it well, at work! The black midi dress is not too tight but shows off my bump nicely and it’s sooo comfy. Midi’s are great for the short ones amongst us too, as it helps accentuate our little pins. These come at a bargain price of £8 from Boohoo in lots of different colours.
I’ve even been wearing the dress with these cute sandals at work which were a great find at New Look for only £19.99 and they are real leather so are pretty comfy. This outfit can easily be dressed up with heels and a nice jacket, especially for important meetings.
You may think black is a bit boring but adding accessories like this necklace I have from H&M really transforms a dress each time you wear it. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of this one.
Outfit 2
This is another Boohoo dress at the bargain price of £10. Slightly more elegant with it being a maxi but all the above applies and you can see how I’ve made it quite different through a change in necklace and different shoe colour. I’ve got so many colours in my wardrobe now for any occasion!!!
Outfit 3
When I said raid that current wardrobe, I really meant it! I found this Zara bodycon dress with three quarter length sleeves from last season and it’s perfect for weddings or a hot summer evening with friends. It’s really stretchy and fits a bump shape perfectly. There are plenty around like this and you can grab yourself a bargain in the sales. I also feel good that it’s not maternity and that I’m wearing relatively normal clothes and of course the bonus of it being free!
Shoes wise I didn’t opt for my normal 4 inches but heels high enough to feel pretty great and gain some height without over doing it.
Find similar at Bank.
Outfit 4
This blue lace dress from Topshop was one I kept from my rather extravagant £700 spree. It’s actually available in a non-maternity and maternity option. I bought both just to see the difference but I couldn’t find any (!) This is a classic example of the fact you don’t always have to buy maternity wear, as long as there is room to grow. I wore this to the christening and interchanged between flats and heels for when I was photographing so if you do feel comfier in flats then this one works really well.
Outfit 5
Finally, little floaty dresses also work well with a thin belt to show off your bump and pretty shoes. I already had a few in my wardrobe which I actually picked up from Camden Market but again there are plenty of these around at really reasonable prices. As they’re not specifically made for maternity I feel comfier wearing leggings, as your bump grows the dress can ride up slightly at the front but not enough to worry about.
There are plenty of maternity leggings to choose from and I’ll be wearing a lot of these when Winter sets in with fitted long jumpers so if you buy now they won’t be wasted!
Aww you look lovely Lisa!
Can anyone recommend good maternity tights? Something 80 Denier of above? I have long legs and I’m not at the stage where my normal tights are rolling down and I end up resembling Nora Batty!
Also attending a wedding in October and looking for a suitable outfit (will be 7 months by then) which is a) comfortable b) doesn’t make me look like a whale and c) something I could potentially wear after the baby arrives too!
Congratulations!!! I actually just wore Walford or Falke regular opaque tights in a size bigger than usual. They washed well and fit over the bump for the most part, when I got really big they were comfy under bump. They are expensive but they don’t fall down at all. x
I do like a bit of Wolford but was worried that sizing up might not be a good idea since I already need a large due to the length of my pins! Anything is better than Nora Batty so will give them a go x
Hi. Isabella Oliver was my saviour for the many weddings I went to when pregnant – great dresses! And they’re doing a 2 day £30 dress event at the moment. Loads of their dresses (which can be quite pricey) reduced to £30. Hope this helps… Lx http://www.isabellaoliver.com/uk
I looked at these too Laura – I didn’t purchase any but for Occasion wear I’d say it’s one of the better specific maternity brands out there x
I’m a big fan. The styles themselves can be a bit on the dull side but the fit, comfort and quality is great and flattering over the bump. You just need to go bold with accessories and shoes to add a bit of wow factor and personality. The blue one shouldered bodycon dress got me through a whole lot of events (and hopefully will again in this pregnancy).
Yes I looked at these Laura, my friend also sent me this website over which I haven’t had chance to look through properly yet but could be some nice dresses for occasions coming up.

Thanks for the tip Laura. I did have a look at Isabella Oliver but none of the dresses were very ‘me’. It’s quite possible that they would look nice on though so maybe I just need to order some and try them on at home – £30 is a bargain!!
Thanks Lynsey, I’m not on to tights yet but as the Autumn is approaching I would appreciate some advice. I did see some in Topshop which I may give a go!! I think I may go for over the bump to keep it warm! x
Hi Lynsey,
Depending on your personal style obviously, I recently wore a Coast dress called ‘Marley’ (currently in sale!) to a wedding in a size up from my usual size and it was great, the layers covered the bump really well and was super comfy – there are a few others on the site that might work in the same way. Tights wise I just invested in some bumpy ones at trusty Mothercare.
Good luck!
x
Marley is lush, will have a nosey in Coast!
Some great ideas here – loving the blue lace and the floral dresses. When I was pregnant I found anything specifically maternity made me look a lot bigger than I was so I wore mostly blouses and shirts I already had or bought new ones in a size up. For weddings, again I was lucky enough to be able to use dresses I already had and found that for me, the more bodycon styles were a lot more flattering than wearing looser things which can end up looking tent like and therefore you look larger than you are.
I wore my regular skinnies until around 7 months then swapped to Asos maternity skinnies which I found to be the best ones I tried. I also had some amazing double waisted regular leggings from Toppy which are no longer showing online – argh!
Lisa – you look gorgeous!
Love the stretchy Zara dress. The print is beautiful x
Thanks Lauren, I’m wearing it this weekend to a wedding and the week after. Definitely getting some wear out of it. So pleased I can fit into something relatively normal looking. x

Hi Lisa- congratulations on your bump and managing to look so gorgeous in mostly non Maternity clothes! I love the floral dress. I’m heading in week 22 with my second and have found bump popped out much earlier this time round and maternity wear, especially jeans and trousers are just comfier. Topshop maternity skinnies are absolutely fab fit, so much so I’m ashamed to say they were worn long after Evie arrived and continued to look better with wear! For occasion wear I agree Isobella Oliver is really lovely quality and you can get regular deals and discount offers if you sign up to their email blasts. Hope you continue to be well and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy- the best is yet to come! xx
Congratulations to you too!! Yes i had heard that things happen quicker 2nd time round!!! I’m a big fan of topshop leigh maternity jeans and I think you’re right I’ll be holding onto them for as long as poss!! Thanks I’m very excited now!! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy. Xx
