I hold my hands up when I say this wasn’t my idea. I pinned an image of some super cute spray painted animals to my own Pinterest board several years ago but it wasn’t until recently that I tracked down some cheap plastic figures. I’m not one for scouring the shops for toys but when I was in B&M recently I saw a huge box of safari animals for the bargainous price of £2.99. You never know when you’ll have the need for a hippo figurine so I snapped up a box and then remembered the DIY I wanted to try out.

Tutorial
1. Take the lid from an empty jar and rub lightly with sandpaper to create a base for the spray paint to stick to. It may not have escaped your beady eyes but our jar here is filled with delicious marmalade but I’d suggest just working with empty jars on this occasion.
2. Take the plastic animal and apply super glue to the feet and then stick in place on the jar lid. Leave to dry.
3. In a well ventilated area (ideally outside) lay out layers of newspaper. To avoid the lid sticking to the paper when painted it’s also a good idea to grab a good lump of blue tack and position under the middle of the lid.
4. Shake spray paint well and apply a thin layer of paint to the animal and lid. Leave to dry and then spray again building up light layers of paint
5. When completely dry, fill jars with chosen filling and screw lid back in place.

I filled my jars with office supplies but there are endless options for using these handy containers. I know my niece has her eye on them for her own bedroom to cram full of hair accessories and those flipping loom bands. Anybody inspired to give this a whirl?
Ahhhhh this is on my pinterest wall too!
They look so flipping fab! Maybe I could make some for my niece’s birthday (or maybe just for me!!!)
Fab work xx
Much more time efficient to make them in big batches Rebecca. That way you can have some for her and some for yourself x
Ah I’m so doing this for my new bathroom to keep all my bit and bobs in! Thanks Lauren :o)
Fab idea to use in the bathroom Becca. They’d be great with cotton wool and that type of paraphernalia x
I absolutely love these! What a cute idea! I have some of these very same animals left over actually from my boys camping party – we used them as cake toppers, in the prize pot and in party bags. I think I may only have an odd camel left – I just last week gave my last giraffe away. As part of the gift wrap on my brothers birthday present I attached one (he loves giraffes?!) and wrote a tag saying ‘Giraffe a good birthday?’ (which in the right northern accent is, I thought, quite funny) He didn’t laugh… so I might ask for it back. (and then present him with a giraffe jar for Christmas…? Might even try the joke again. Did you just use any old superglue?
The giraffe tale is ace!
Yep just regular super glue. I think it was from Sainsbury’s.
Ah! I pinned this too and bought the animals on Ebay and have the jars ready I just never got round to doing it – This has reminded me to get it finished!
Yes do Vicky. You are so nearly there! Finding the animals is the trickiest part.
I’ve seen similar ones at our local market. They look pretty cool with metallic paint. I do like simple projects like these!
Thanks Kat, I’ve got another super simple DIY coming up next week!
Such a cool and simple idea! x
Right that’s the dummy and cotton wool jars sorted for the nursery, pretty sure I have some gold metallic spray paint and will go fab with the animal wallpaper! Thank you x
Glad to have helped Hayley 🙂
I’ve done 3 this weekend! I found a bear, a camel and one last giraffe so got to work on some jars in the overflowing recycling tub. (The giraffes look better painted over – I think the ‘animal designer’ for this set got a bit lazy and doubled up on the leopards). I didn’t want to venture to find any sandpaper though – that would mean moving things in the shed I’m not sure I want to move. I had a tub of Annie Sloan chalk paint nearby so tried it with that instead as it wouldn’t need sanding so mine are a matt grey and storing some hair bands. My boy wants me to make him one with a lego figure glued on top to keep his minifigures in… a good use for the spare santa lego man we have at last!
This is amazing, I’ve never seen anything like it!! Can’t wait to try it! x
