There has been a considerable amount of unprecedented action happening behind the scenes at Rock My Ltd these past 6 months, I don’t write about the business element of what we do very often, I personally don’t think it’s at all relevant, or indeed interesting, to our community.
But when we decide to make what could be some significant changes, and I’m now in a position where I’m juggling an ever expanding business and a young family I thought perhaps it was the ideal opportunity to share some news and an update – turns out career type advice/discussions are one of our most popular subject areas in terms of both traffic and reader engagement.
Over five and half years ago I founded Rock My Wedding, right from the beginning I knew I wanted a brand, not a one-off “blog”. It was as much about creating the kind of company I wanted to work for as it was filling a sector with a voice and an aesthetic I could see was missing and actually becoming a success.
I wanted a company that was fun, flexible and creative. A company that listened to their team, respected their experience, unique skills and opinions and constantly evolved what we do, not only as a necessity to continue to expand and improve, but to ensure our employees were as inspired and motivated as I am. Of course when I say “I” I mean the royal we – Adam too, we were both lucky enough to previously work for a business that had many of the qualities we endeavour to adopt.
Some of you may already be aware that Fern and Lolly have both recently become mothers, they both returned to work last Monday and we are so pleased to have them back! As part of a general re-structure and to ensure we adhere to what we set out to do, both have taken on new roles in the company. I think it’s important to allow people to grow, not only for their benefit but for the business too, I think it’s important for team members to be rewarded for their contributions and offer new and interesting responsibilities. I truly believe diversity breeds creativity.
Fern is now the Editor of Rock My Wedding, a role that she has proved she is more than capable of managing, we are very excited about all of the new and unique concepts she has in the pipeline. Lolly has become our Brand Development Manager, becoming much more involved with our social media channels (with 1.3 million followers on her personal Pinterest account we figured this made perfect um… sense!) and contributing editorial wise to both RMW and Rock My Style. Expect to see a wealth of inspiring interior decor as she renovates her new home and various other style led (and of course VERY pinnable) content from her over the coming months.
Both Fern and Lolly work hours to suit their childcare arrangements. There is a clear allocation of work that at least for the most part, needs to be completed to strict deadlines, it doesn’t matter one jot to us when this work is done as long as it is. This is how I want it to be for parents that work for my company. We are very flexible and our team are flexible in return – our online business is 24/7, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
When we initially launched Rock My Style we were more than aware that some areas would be more popular than others, we were also aware that we really couldn’t predict what those areas would be until we tried everything out and monitored the subsequent response. We feel that now, with 15 months worth of experience and associated data, we are in a position where we can hone what we do to really make Rock My Style the best online lifestyle website and resource in the UK. Yes, you’ve got to dream big and aim high, because actually – what have you got to lose?
So, what does all this mean for you? Well, it means you will experience more valuable content, more of the topics, products and ideas we know are your favourite. Expect to actually see less features overall, I make that statement hoping that you won’t jump to the conclusion we are taking our feet off the pedal – quite the opposite. We’re making it about quality not quantity, whilst still ensuring you have something new to look forward to nearly every single day – yep, expect to see new features popping up over the weekends too.
We will also be putting our efforts into creating inspiring and unique content for our social media platforms. Any good blogger knows that these days, it isn’t just about the ….blog. We will also be introducing you to some new and covetable brands whilst still covering a wide range of price points and promoting products that actually work. Not just stuff we’ve been paid to say are ace. And you will never have to worry about us feeling the need to wax lyrical about something or other just because we were given a freebie. Our business needs sponsors in order to exist, but we only want to work alongside brands that fit with our ethos and actually make a quantifiable difference to our personal day to day lives.
We are super excited to see what the future holds including the launch of a brand new blog in the not too distant future, we hope to be able to share more details very soon. Thanks so much for joining us for the crazy journey so far and we sincerely hope you will stay on board for the long haul and a whole host of amazing adventures along the way.
Please do leave any questions or suggestions in the comments box below. Have a wonderful Monday all!
P.S If you haven’t had enough of us already you can follow us on Facebook, instagram, pinterest and Twitter.
P.P.S Lolly has created a board dedicated entirely to pineapples…. I knew she was the right woman for the job.
This sounds great and very exciting! Looking forward to finding out what the next Rock My blog is… I’m really hoping from a selfish point of view that it is babe related as our first one is due in August. But, no doubt whatever it is, I will love it! Thanks RMS
Me too and me too due in Aug! Love RMS – mainly baby, make up and interiors things.
Well you know….you girls will just have to wait and see 🙂
Um… me three! also due in August and would LOVE a baby blog… pretty pleeeeease! x
Never mind Rock My Baby we need Rock My Due in Aug! 😉
Ahhh all these summer babies!! So cute! Well you’ll just have to wait and see won’t you….
You guys are such an inspiration, I think you do a fantastic job and can’t wait to see what is next! xx
Thanks Emma, we very much appreciate your loyal following of our blog world 🙂 x
Exciting times! Looking forward to seeing more, love all that you do. Had a random dream you had a ‘rock my crib’ blog the other day! X
Ha ha haha! Would that be as in baby or as it MTV “Cribs” ?! The latter would be hilarious, we could do shoots that included pimping EVERYTHING. x
Charlotte you may jest but I actually had that noted down in the ‘future plans for the Rock My…’ folder.
Snort.
I’m not sure where to begin with this comment. Charlotte and Adam have literally watched me ‘grow up’ and have been amazingly supportive of my randomness…moving to Cornwall on a whim, having a baby a lot sooner than expected…and hopefully one day will see me get married (!)
Reading Lauren’s Friday post reminded me how lucky I am to be able to work around Elle (who is now 15 weeks old!!!) and it’s hard to not sound smug when I say I love my job – but I really do. Every day is fun, the team are great to work with and the support, both on a professional and personal level, is amazing. There aren’t many colleagues you can text about breast pumps 😉 or who understand crazy first time parent paranoia.
Plus my absolute LOVE of weddings and all they symbolise and entail will never, ever grow old – so being Editor of Rock My Wedding is a dream come true.
It’s so exciting to share the journey of life with you all (gaaaah that sounds so cheesy, but it’s true) and I love that RMW readers migrate over to RMS and hopefully the *new blog* will worth waiting for – you’re going to love it.
Fern x
Huge congrats to you Fern, on becoming RMW editor but also having Elle 🙂 It seems such a long time since we did the Pretty Naughty event, but you’ve come so far with RMW and I am really pleased for you! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for RMW xx
Wow, yes it does seem like a lifetime ago…but also just like yesterday if that makes any sense?!
Ekkkk we’ve all got lots of plans for making RMW even bigger and better 🙂 hopefully you’ll stick with us!
(Maybe one day we’ll finally be planning our own weddings hey??)
Fern x
I was a loyal reader of RMW when planning my wedding (and before then too but don’t tell my husband!) and I absolutely love RMS, particularly the baby posts (despite not having a baby yet, they are just so helpful and the comments really show people appreciate the advice – I save every one for future use!). I’m so excited for you all, and for the new blog of course, and I wish you every success! x
Thanks so much Annie, we think you will love the third blog as much as RMW and RMS! we really appreciate your continued support x
I am afraid that I’m going to be somewhat of a parrot and pretty much repeat everything that Fern has said in her comment above. It’s been a whirlwind adventure for me right back when I first joined the team in 2012 as RMW’s first employee through to this sunny morning three years later.
We’ve had one hell of a ride accompanied by cocktails by the gallon and lots of magic and sparkle. There’s not many bosses you could text late at night about Ryan Gosling or pineapples and that’s including Adam here as well as Charlotte 😉
During my time with this crazy duo I’ve seen the team rapidly expand to include lots of other super lovely and amazingly skilled individuals, which has only been topped off by getting married, moving house and having a baby. You could say that I like to pack things in.
But I wouldn’t be able to do this without the support, flexibility and I’m going to say ‘love’ too from the whole RM Ltd team. I count my lucky stars every day to be able to do what I do.
Having been married for nearly three years now it seemed right to pass on the ‘editor’ mantle to the very capable Fern who will be amazing in the role, whilst I’m relishing the exciting opportunities that my new role will give me.
I’m very much looking forward to sharing more with you lovely lot xxxx
P.S. the new blog is going to be flipping AWESOME.
Great stuff! Welcome back from mat leave ladies. Looking forward to seeing what you’re getting up to in the new house Lolly! x
Oh yeah, I forgot to say I’m on tenterhooks to see how beautiful your house is Lolly (we all know it is sure to be gorgeous!) x
Me too Kitty! That girl has some serious style 🙂
Hoping we still get to nose round your gorgeous house too Lauren! x
I’m sure that can be arranged! x
You three! Honestly talk about making a girl blush. Thank you though for your very kind compliments. Am feeling a bit hot under the collar with pressure now though…eeek!
I find these posts really interesting and inspirational to boot! Having started as a RMW reader years and years ago I really enjoy hearing about your plans and getting an update on what you’re up to in the background!
I have to say, I am rather envious of you all! It sounds like you and Adam have created the perfect company to work for Charlotte, I wish I could be in your team 😀
Congrats Fern & Lolly on your new roles and your gorgeous bubs, can’t wait to hear more from you all xx
Kitty we try – work is such a huge part of peoples life we want them to enjoy it as much as feasibly possible. Sometimes we have occasions when it might not be terribly convenient – we have a two day meeting in Birmingham for the whole team (now 9 of us!) next week but for example, Fern is actually bringing Elle and her partner to stay over too. Why not – as long as Fern’s there we don’t mind at all!
It’s not as if our team can simply “switch off” at a specific “finish” time necessarily, we completely appreciate that – but then I think we pick the right people that are happy to join in with everything we do and how we do it…hope that makes sense! x
Thanks Kitty 🙂
Honestly, it feels like some of the RMW Real Brides are part of the team anyway!! We really appreciate the loyalty!
Thanks Charlotte for the update, I always love reading about the business side of things as I just find it all so inspirational. I am in awe of everything you, Adam and the rest of the team have achieved. I love RMW and still enjoy perusing those pretty pages for a dollop of wedding joy! When you launched RWS, I was super excited and it’s been my lunch time go-to reading at work ever since. I am due my first baby in August and selfishly I would LOVE a baby blog with the same amount of pizazz, style and friendly advice as RMW and RMS! The internet is seriously lacking in a people friendly maternity platform – every other online environment aimed at new mums just seems so dangerously bitchy and scary, I steer well clear. The environment you have created through your blogs feels just like having a coffee with my friends and chatting about their own experiences. I have no doubt that your third blog will be awesome, and baby-related or not, I for one can’t wait to get tucked in!
Thanks so much for your feedback Maddy, I think many of us have had a similar experience on parenting forums. I very much like the word Pizazz! goodness the pressure…..I will absolutely make sure our next blog has plenty of it 🙂 x
So pleased that your able to offer a flexible work place and am very excited by the changes coming along. It might sound odd, but I am happy that you are scaling back the number of posts per day – there are days I don’t have time to comment till the afternoon/evening – and even more thrilled at the idea of weekend posts 🙂
Looking forward to seeing the plans come together!
Thanks Caroline! I think sometimes you just need to mix things up a bit and monitor the results x
Actually yes, Caroline makes a good point about the less posts thing. Definitely quality over quantity but it’s also good for the community side of things, those of us who pop on at different times can still be very much part of the discussion – something I’ve always loved about RMW & RMS.
It’s so great to see you all doing well, and exciting to hear about a new blog coming too! I still pop over to RMW now and then to get a bit misty eyed and nostalgic (confession – I spend one morning a few weeks back, hungover reading all of my old posts and having a bit of a cry. Loved every minute of hideous self indulgence). x
Hehehehehe I love you Karen – this is hilarious x
Hated myself for it, but I couldnt help it Fern… I think I was still drunk x
Wow…
Thanks for all the kind messages of support! I’m really proud of where we are as a company and I’m glad that we provide you all with so much inspiration 🙂
I’m also really pleased that you are on board with our planned changes… We promise not to disappoint! It’s also really interesting to hear from some of you that two posts a day can sometimes be a little much to keep up with, I hope that more selective publishing might help build our loyal community even further.
Adam! Haven’t seen you round these parts for a while – has Mrs O’Shea had you locked in the design/development cupboard of doom again?!
Lynsey you’re in for a treat tomorrow. Adam’s showing off his bedroom!
Absolutely Lynsey – that’s where he belongs 🙂
Ha… I think that question has been answered 🙂
great to read this inspiring update about recent changes and new things on the horizon. Its great to get a feel for the working ethos and teamwork behind RMW and RMS. As a newish mum and someone who runs a wedding business your posts always hit the spot! Welcome back to Fern and Lolly after your mat leave and I look forward to seeing whats to come…..good luck!
Hi Corrie *waves* it’s great to be back! How are you finding being a mum and running your business? We’re super excited to share what we have in store with all of you!
Thanks Corrie 🙂
Must admit I totally love the two post a day concept and think its totally unique, so I will be sad to see that go. Plus it gets me through the day if I am having a dreadful day having two post of pretty and engaging content to look at. However, I will wait to see the new content before forming an opinion! 🙂
Hi Emma! sometimes you will absolutely see more than one post a day – we’re just scaling back in some areas and concentrating on others, with a few surprises thrown in for good measure! x
That’s excellent news Charlotte, I too love the two posts (to get me through the working day!)
With our first due in October (all being well) a rmb blog would be amazing.
Can’t wait to read what you all have planned, amazing work
Thanks Louise! EEEE excited for October! It will be here before you know it x
Rock my Ltd sounds like a fab place to work! I’ve loved RMW since planning my wedding a few years ago and enjoy the daily pretty and varied content from RMS! Look forward to your new venture! A stylish baby blog would be ace!
Hi Charlotte! Thanks so much for being such a loyal reader, I’m sure you will love the new blog just as much as RMW and RMS x
Yay!!! Go team Rock My Ltd..!!!
I’d bet big money on it being a Rock My Baby/Parenthood style blog and I for one will be super happy if it is!!!
As for the team, little did I know that back when I entered to become a RMW Real Bride, what I was actually doing was signing up for a Massive life change. I honestly believe there would be no Doris Loves if I hadn’t have become a Real Bride. And RMW is still my top blog referrer. You guys have given me such an amazing opportunity and I couldn’t thank you enough!!! Last month I opted for voluntary redundancy from my day job, I now run Doris Loves and look after Mila both part-time and could NOT be happier!!!
SO it’s not just your very lucky employees who’s life’s you have changed for the better!!!
So please don’t stop Rocking the internet world!!!
Oh and massive congratulations on joining the mummy club and the new roles, Lauren and Fern can’t wait to see what you have in store for us all!!!
Well done Amanda!
I’d echo your sentiments completely… I didnt get a business out of it, but being a RMW Real Bride brought a handful of people into my life that I now count as my dearest, closest friends, it also led to me and my pal starting Neighbourhood Sewcial – so I’m definitely in the life-change camp too.x
Thanks Karen!!
BTW.. I still pop back every now and then and read my old posts, hehehe.. so you’re not the only one!!!
haha SO glad its not just me… I’ll still be doing it in 30 years, weeping away into my gin, wishing I was a bride again! x
Amanda how lovely! Such a super “Rock My” tale 🙂
I’m very glad to hear Doris Loves is doing so well xx
Hi Charlotte, I have followed your fabulous blogs since I got engaged in 2012. As a “people professional” (aka HR bod) I wanted to pay a particular tribute to your emphasis on championing diversity as a way to create a brilliant business. It is really refreshing to see so many women (and men) under your leadership making a real success of life and work. Great job!xxx
Francesca thanks so much for your comment, it made me a wee bit misty eyed. I think Adam and I both know what it is like to work in an environment which is the exact opposite of what we endeavour to do now – it only pushes you harder to do things the right way x
Just wanted to add another comment as a regular reader who often comments, to say a huge congrats to you all – it’s very inspiring to see how far and how well you’ve steered this lovely, boutique business. You’ve created such a lovely, supportive place within this community and you’ve single handedly managed to triple my collection of expensive lipsticks. I look forward to your posts and I also regularly read the comments for advice on make up finds, holiday tips etc. I’m also now expecting my first little one later this year (seems like a right of passage once you graduate from RMW!) and I’ve been trawling the Mabel-related posts and comments for tips on buggy’s and various equipment that I have no idea I need – it’s literally a godsend!
One of the things that sets you apart, aside from the warm personality of all those involved and their enviable sense of style, is that you regularly make time to respond to your comments and put your readers at the heart of the community – basically team ‘rock my..’ do in fact ROCK. Wishing you nothing but love and luck for the future.
Lynne I am so glad the response to comments is appreciated, and huge congratulations on your news! so very exciting!
Also I am very proud to be the enabler of your extensive (and expensive) lipstick collection x
I don’t often comment but I love reading the blog every day and seeing people’s opinions, advice and supporting each other. Must comment more and looking forward to seeing all the changes and new blog!
Cheers Lisa – your comments are more than welcome anytime 🙂 x
I can’t wait to see what’s coming! I’ve been a fan of the Rock My Empire ever since planning our wedding, then enjoying Rock my style even more. Thanks for creating something as intriguing and entertaining as your blogs! Like I said, can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store for us!
Ha ha Anja Empire! funny you should say that though…..when we pitched to investors we did use that expression 🙂 x
Absolutely brilliant! It’s been lovely to watch you go from strength to strength – you’re hugely inspirational to us all! I look forward to seeing what the future brings for you! Exciting times :o) xx
Thanks so much Emma x
I think I am a bit different to most readers as I came to RMS before RMW (it does look very pretty over there but I am saving reading it for one the time comes!) It’s great to hear more about the business side of things as I find it really interesting and inspiring, so it would be great to hear more of that side. RMS is such a brilliant blog, and I love reading it – so in awe of the brand you have built up. Lastly, congratulations Lolly and Fern on your new additions and new roles! X
Hi Sian! comment noted, perhaps it is something we can talk more about when it’s relevant/interesting…..sometimes it’s like go go go! and you don’t get chance to reflect and say “We did that”. Adam and I make a massive effort to congratulate our team when they have done something super (which is um…pretty much every day!) but rarely realise what we have achieved so to speak. When the time comes I hope you love RMW as much as RMS 🙂 x
Thanks Sian – we look forward to seeing you over on RMW one day 😉
Hi Sian – thanks so much for your kind words! We’re so pleased you love RMS as much as we do! Hopefully we’ll keep you entertained going forwards xx
Exciting news indeed! I’m also secretly (or not so secretly I suppose) hoping for a rock my baby blog. You’ve created a lovely online journey for people on the same path as me: RMW, RMS and now maybe RMB!!! And such a nice, non judgy pants forum for all at all stages of life too. Looking forward to whatever comes next.
Steph – non judgy pants is where it’s at! It’s interesting you should say path – it’s the basis of our huge team meeting next week. Watch this space x
Congrats to you all! It’s a fab blog and news of another one can only be great! I loved being a real bride and getting to meet a lot of you and have got the best make up collection thanks to the O’Shea enabling! So many fab things on here to read and inspiration I can’t wait to see what’s coming! Congrats again and good luck in everything! X
Thanks Alex, we really feel as though many of you are part of our wider “family” as it were. I am still determined for you to find a fab lip product you can wear all the time! x
You have always been one of my fave blogs and I’m still a daily reader! 🙂 and will continue to be! All your hard work totally shows and it’s great to hear you are such family friendly employers. Congratulations Charlotte and Adam and the whole team. You are inspirational!
Rachie xo
Ps: sorry for the late comment I’m on holiday in texas!
Rachie xo
Texas! I have always wanted to go……very jealous x
It is so incredibly refreshing and empowering to see a company which supports and values the Mummy Factor. It annoys me that this is still a novelty to be commented upon, when really by 2015 it should be standard across all industries. But it isn’t, so it’s important for women in other jobs to see that flexi working DOES work – in fact it ADDS value to your business through loyalty and working additional hours, and having a new perspective. Those of us in less progressive workplaces can take heart knowing that this does work, and gives us inspiration to broach the subject with our own bosses when the time comes. Thank you for being great diversity role models.
I love the work-life content you do on RMS. I also love the must-have content (especially the make up and beauty buys). I like posts which provide thoughts and then encourage participation, rather than the ones which solely ask readers for opinions – mostly because the thoughts of your team are always so well written that it is much more fun to read what they think!
Have you thought about doing some posts around skills? I don’t quite know how to describe it, but it would be interesting to hear some photography tips from Adam / tips on starting your own business / tips for a successful blog / moving to a new place and a discussion of the challenges that brings from Fern / things like that.
Anyway, I love what RMS and RMW do on a daily basis. RMS has DEFINITELY evolved over the past year and it’s getting better all the time so you guys definitely know what your readers want! 🙂
Hi Stacey! I absolutely believe flexi hours/diversity of a role brings not only creativity but loyalty too as you said. We will take your skills/tips comment on board, I’m sure we can come up with some useful features x
Stacey – I’d love to be taught handy and easy photography tips too so I’ll be pestering Adam to do something of the sort on RMS in the next few months. Stay tuned!
This sounds exciting! And it’s so wonderful to read that you support flexible working. That’s always been my major problem with working for someone else – that they wanted me working certain hours a day rather than working towards a set result or a deadline and trusting me to manage my time. So I chose to work for myself instead! It’s good to know there’s a new breed of companies actually looking after their employees and resulting then that way. Gives me hope 🙂
Good for you Antonina!!! Best of luck 🙂 I’m sure your hard work will pay off!
Fern x
Such a great post. Your ethos needs to be rolled out across the globe! So happy to read all the exciting developments, well done ladies & Adam x
