Over the last 18 months I’ve talked about and recommended A LOT of beauty products. And I won’t advise you should purchase something on these pages unless I’ve tried it my self and think it’s amazing. But the REAL test when it comes to cosmetics and skincare is if it’s so good you’ve bought it again. And again.
For those of you that don’t know, I have fine, dry and sensitive skin however, that’s not to say my bathroom essentials are not suitable for all skin types. This lot is also under a tenner (more like a fiver if you consider the various discount promotions and 3 for 2 offers they continually have on many of these brands at Boots) and as much as I love a budget bargain, the reason I stockpile these fixer uppers is because they are ace. Not because they are cheap.
Soap & Glory Smoothie Star Body Milk £10.00 : This has artificial perfume in it which I generally avoid but I was completely won over by the delicious brown sugar-esque scent, plus I know from experience that many of the ingredients such as oats, honey and almond work well for my dehydrated epidermis.
I have no idea what a “waterlock moisture trapping matrix” is that the bottle promotes but this stuff makes my limbs all sheeny and dewy and lush and lovely. I haven’t had any kind of adverse reaction to it and I’m now on my third lot, in fact my eczema has been fairly under control since I began applying this body milk after every shower.
If you’re not a fan of your sheets becoming fragranced with (albeit very expensive) granola then I would also recommend Vaseline Intensive Care Advance Repair Body Lotion “fragrance free”. No where near as fun but does the job of keeping flakes at bay. Plus it’s only £5.49 for a similar volume.
NIVEA MEN Sensitive Protect 48H Anti-Perspirant Deodorant Stick £2.95: Yes it’s targeted at blokes but it works. And it’s non irritating and the faint fresh aroma of your underarms won’t clash with your Chanel No.5. I’ve use this for years. If Nivea ever discontinue it I would throw a full on tantrum.
Max Factor Clump Defy Extensions False Lash Effect Mascara £11.99* : You can read my full review of this purple tube of awesome here. I have tried many mascaras, too many to remember to be honest. And I have several on rotation at any one time because they provide different looks, from fluttery and natural to long and glossy to full on falsies. The lash extensions is my most reached for on a daily basis, it doesn’t flake or smudge and you can layer it on in a jiffy. Which is important when you have a 17 month old hanging from your leg shouting at the top of their voice that they want a drinkie whilst simultaneously stabbing you in the knee with a crayon.
Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liner Sweet Pink £3.99 : I don’t wear lip liner every day, but it’s one of those products that when I have time to apply, I always say to myself that I should make the effort more frequently – it really does prevent lipstick bleed and enhances the size and shape of your pout. This colour is a perfect kind of “your lips but better” hue, a pinky/beige/rose/mauve hybrid, and it doesn’t ever drag. A make-up artist introduced me to it about 6 years ago, around the time we launched Rock My Wedding and I’ve never looked back.
Boots Simply Sensitive Cleansing Lotion £2.79 : I must be on my 30th bottle. No word of a lie. I use this with cotton wool to remove make-up and then apply an additional dollop to remove dead skin cells and daily grime with a warm flannel. As it costs the square root of a bag of posh crisps I am fairly liberal with it. And I always always buy it on 3 for 2 or when Boots have some kind of own brand sale on. Which is basically all the time.
Aveeno Cream With Natural Colloidal Oatmeal £6.99 : This is the holy grail of my beauty arsenal. If I get even half way through a tube I get kind of itchy and have to buy a back up just in case I run out and there isn’t any stock left anywhere is the world (dramatic but real folks). A dermatologist recommended this to me after my twenty four year old self turned up to his clinic with a severe reaction to something or other, a face the colour of beetroot and everything else on the planet burned like hell. It’s so gentle sometimes I even use it on my eyelids.
Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer £3.99 This is one of those essentials I forget to mention. I guess because it’s not particularly pretty to look at. Besides, concealer isn’t exactly a sexy product is it? Well, this might not be as awe inspiring as my shiny balls but I haven’t found anything that covers blemishes and the red bits around your nose as well. I don’t use it on my eye area personally but I know some ladies with normal and/or oilier complexions that do and they swear by it for dark circle coverage that doesn’t crease.
Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Cream £7.33: You know how I was just saying concealer wasn’t sexy? Well this is even less so. But it is an absolute necessity as far as I’m concerned and has so many uses that I dedicated a whole feature to its greatness. True story. You should probably buy some.
Do let me know what your beauty bargains on repeat are, I bet we’ll find some real gems via the comments! And as always, please feel free to ask any questions on the products reviewed in this article.
*I know my mathematic skills are shoddy but even I realise £11.99 is not less than ten quid – I have never paid this much for this mascara, in fact, there is currently a buy one get one half price on Max Factor at Boots.
P.S I also realise the vast majority of the above link to Boots – that’s because it’s where I happen to shop and there is a huge one in a retail park a few miles away from where we live. Sometimes on a rainy Sunday afternoon I like to go there just to “have a look at the things…..”
Aveeno 100%. If I even try to stray to posher face creams or ‘treat’ myself I always regret it, especially in winter. This is what works for me, love it!!! Also using No. 7 Face Oil at night at the moment which is fabulous and not to pricey compared to some oils – despite coveting the Sunday Riley ones. Obviously 😉
Nikki I didn’t know no.7 did an oil? I’m quite sure I have a £5 off voucher somewhere…..
And ditto on the Aveeno! x
I always use Palmers cocoa butter. I’ve been using it since I was a student so almost 15 years now (how is it that long???) and I think it’s a brilliant body moisturiser that also smells awesome. I am also about to re-buy nip and fab’s deep cleansing fix. I can’t remember how much it is but it’s less than a tenner and I genuinely prefer it to the £50 pot of Eve Lom cleanser I once invested in. I use it with muslin cloths. I’m also on my second bottle of the body shop’s vitamin e night serum in oil. It’s £13 I know, but they do similar bargain offers to boots and I love how it makes me skin look in the morning. Dewy and fresh! Speaking of the body shop, if you’ve not been for a while it’s worth a trip. Someone on here recommended the serum a while ago so I paid them a visit. They were doing a deal on a £25 spend so I added some satsuma shower gel and the banana conditioner which both remind me of being a teenager and now my showers smell even more amazing! Oh, and I now use the Olay moisturiser..
Ooh Jennifer what a lot of lovely suggestions! I was actually at Euston recently and went into the body shop – they had a whole range of new oils and things, I didn’t have long to investigate but apparently they have had rave reviews. I uses Palmers when I was pregnant, it was excellent x
Hello! I was just wondering if anyone can recommend any of these products for acne-prone skin? I’m currently suffering quite badly from adult acne as a side effect of polycystic ovary syndrome…..us girls have all the fun hey?! 😉
Hi Sarah, the concealer is great for blemishes – it’s used by many a beauty blogger so I’m told x
Aveeno – check
Lansinoh – check
Max factor mascara – check
You can’t beat a Boots 3 for 2 offer for the every day must haves *. As well as a constant supply of Aveeno I’ve usually got the Nivea cleansing products stocked up and various bottles of dove/Nivea moisturisers. I also have one of those giant sudacrem tubs, bought primarily for the 8 week old baby but used on everyone from the Mr to the dog.
*defintions of ‘must have’ is under constant debate in our household
Steph I feel your pain, I am always saying I “must have” everything… 🙂
I started using the Max Factor mascara on your recommendation and haven’t looked back! I love it – it’s the best mascara I’ve ever used (it even surpassed a MAC one I had used previously and loved!) it also comes off cleanly when I remove my make up at the end of the day too – always a plus in my book!
I’ve been put off Soap & Glory when I had a massive reaction to one of their moisturisers. I’m not sure what it was that caused it – my skin is fair but not particularly sensitive, but that coupled with a more recent reaction to some after sun, has led me to think that I need to be far more careful with what I slather on every day. Thank god for e45 cream is all I can say – always seems to calm my skin if I flare up!
Yay Jo! So glad you like the MF mascara. As you don’t get on with certain products I would in that case recommend the Vaseline body lotion that is fragrance free – I can put it on straight after shaving my legs and it doesn’t sting, if anything it really soothes. Obviously do a small patch test first and if it does react keep the receipt and take it back x
I love to treat myself to something pricier once in a while but it is always the cheapies I go back to. My current facial wash was £1 from Asda and it is great! I have used the No 7 concealer stick since I was a teenager, but when I went into Boots last month I found a new concealer with the No7 range called Phwoar Paint. It is a longer lasting concealer for undereyes. I am prone to dark circles so obviously I gave it a go and I am not disappointed. I find it slightly lighter than the usual concealer stick even though I picked the same shade but the coverage is great and at only £5.49 it is a bargain
OOh Claire the concealer stick sounds great! And £1 for a facial wash?! I thought my cleanser was cheap! x
I find that the true test of a product, whether bargain or luxury, is that second (or third!) purchase!! When you find yourself coming to the end of the bottle and cannot imagine yourself going on without another!! I have recently re-discovered the Seventeen range at boots and their CC cream is unbelievable!! The coverage of a foundation, lasts all day, covers my blemishes and stops any shine! One might say a miracle worker 😉 It also features on many of Boots 3 for 2 offers which allows me to stockpile it in case of emergency.
Wow Charlotte, the CC Cream does sound super. It’s funny I always walk past the 17 range because it is so heavy marketed at teens but that’s not to say the products aren’t good quality. I’ll have to take a look next time I’m in Boots (which is at least you know, twice a week…) x
I also highly recommend the seventeen CC cream! It’s amazing! I’m on my third tube and still so surprised how much happier my face looks after applying it. Plus it has SPF. Amazing stuff.
I too have been using the exact same Max Faxtor mascara after it graced these pages and I LOVE IT!!!! I could never find a mascara that didn’t make me look like a panda by lunchtime but this one never rubs off onto my under eye area – thank you Charlotte! 🙂 x
Absolute pleasure Jenna! I love to hear when folks have bought a product I’ve recommended and it’s lived up to expectations x
Another Max Factor mascara convert here – after using Lancome for years and years thinking I would never be able to give it up, this is just as good!
I’m currently trying to cut my spend on beauty and my latest swap is Vichy Aqualia Thermal Light day cream (£17 – but another Boots 3 for 2) which so far is more than a match for my usual Clarins HydraQuench Lotion (£35), saving over 50%!
X
Yay for the MF Katie! I have heard really positive things about the Aqualia range from Vichy but am yet to try x
I now can’t live without Cetaphil Moisturising Cream and Gentle Skin Cleanser, I’m onto my 3rd purchase of each and can’t see myself ever straying! They’ve done wonders for my dry, dehydrated (and occasionally sensitive) face and were also a life saver for my sun & chlorine abused skin while on holiday. I use the cleanser as a facewash in the shower but it also works well with cotton wool to remove make-up.
I’ve spent the last 2 years trying to find a moisturiser that works for me and the Cetaphil one hands-down beats everything I’ve tried (including Vichy, Clinique and Clarins). Love love love it!!!
Both are under a £10 and again always on some kind of offer at Boots 🙂
I didn’t know there was a cetaphil moisturising cream Sarah? And I didn’t know they sold it at Boots! Another excuse to pop in I guess…..
Definitely! It’s not that obvious though because it’s in the pharmacy section rather than with skincare. It’s so good 🙂
Coconut oil… £5 from Tesco. Lasts about 4 months. Use it for EVERYTHING! Makeup remover, moisturiser, hand cream, hair conditioner…And it’s organic.
Cacao butter £7 a tub… Melt it into the coconut oil and you have an amazing body butter that smells of chocolate! Seriously. Fantastic. And again organic with no nasty chemicals.
That’s me done!
Alice this may seem like a silly question but whereabouts in Tesco do you purchase these products? Would they be with the beauty stuff?
Coconut oil is in the food section- it’s used for cooking. It’s solid so is in a tub but as soon as you touch it it melts into a thin oil. You can get it in any health food shop too.
I get my cacao butter from a health food shop, again in the food section and again is solid in a tub. It needs a little more temperature to melt it so is ideal mixed with coconut oil.
My bargain on repeat is the Superdrug Vitamin E Hot Cloth and Cleanser – I bloody love it! It is much better than Liz Earle, in my book, and is a fraction of the price. I like to stock up on it as well (think I have 3 in my house at the moment!!) In the morning, I use the Cetaphil Cleanser which I buy from Costco whenever I go – about £12 for 2 MASSIVE bottles!
Ooh, I didn’t know they sold Cetaphil at Costco! Bargain!!
I have a friend that swears by the Superdrug Hot cloth cleanser Marianne (she has great skin) it didn’t work for me unfortunately but then it wouldn’t do for us all to be the same (and my face is SUPER sensitive). Like you for things I really love I often have at least two lots in the house at once – just in case I misplace one or whatever!
I’m glad its not just me that goes to Boots to look at the things…
🙂 x
I use Cetaphil cleanser, I think I’m on my fourth repurchase. It is hands down the best cleanser I have used. Gets all my make up off but doesn’t leave my skin dry or tight.
I’m also a big fan of Palmer’s VitE concentrate lotion. It’s really thick and creamy and it smells amazing! I just wish they did it in a bigger bottle so I could slather it everywhere.
I also bought the Oil of Olay complete day cream today on your recommendations so we’ll see how that works. ☺️ Xx
The Oil Of Olay is great Alex, the only reason it’s not mentioned here is because I’m still on my first tub x
My skins has never been better since I started using Miamoo splashy wash and moisturiser everyday and occasionally organic coconut oil. All natural. I originally bought the Miamoo products for my children’s but it is amazing. Perfect for dry skin
Sounds great Stacy, thanks for the recommendation x
My comment posted yesterday didn’t send! Anyhoo… Burts Bees Aloe after sun is my repeat repeat. I read aftersun is an excellent all year round moisturiser – I guess it must be extra caring?? This one smells amazing and goes on so easily and is so light.
I echo Alice on the coconut oil… its a complete miracle product. I get it from costo – a raw organic 1.5kg tub is only £12 (another £12 costco bargain) and you can use it for everything. I decant into a slightly smaller container so I’ve always got a pot in the bathroom and the rest ready for cooking and baking. As well as all the uses Alice said it’s also an amazing mouthwash – blogging dentists have amazing things to say about the merits of ‘oil pulling’… which feels so gross to have a block of cooking oil swishing between your teeth… but if its collecting bacteria, soothing gums and whitening teeth as it goes its worth the first few gag-tasic moments!
Amanda the Rock My team had a whole email thread going about oil pulling!!! Personally the very thought makes me feel ill (!) but if it’s natural and works then it must be worth it to some! x
Oil pulling isn’t nearly as grim as it sounds! When you’re ‘swilling’ it feels the same as any mouth wash. Just don’t spit it down the plug hole!
[…] This post from Rock My Style is also about beauty stuff, in particular stuff that we just keep buying because it’s so great. I am one for falling in love with a product and buying it loyally for years, so this was a great post for me. […]
