It’s fair to say we love a Victorian renovation or two on Rock My Style, however we know there are tons of homes from other periods across the British Isles to feast your eyes on too. That’s why I’m tickled pink to be sharing a modern home with you today. The colony houses of Edinburgh were built around the start of the last century as homes for artisans and skilled workers. Edinburgh now boasts a new style colony development based on the traditional design and RMS reader Carley and her other half Fraser have bought a smasher of a new-build right in the heart of the city. Over to Carley for a quick tour..
We bought our home almost two years ago and we absolutely love it here. We are right in the city centre but part of a new style colony development with 37 homes based on the old Edinburgh colony designs. There is a real community amongst everyone here which is unusual these days and all part of the ethos behind the design.
We chose to buy this house not only because of the unique design of the new colonies but also because we were in no position to spend our time or money on renovating an older property which we would have loved to do, but I have to admit, it was exciting to walk into a shiny new blank canvas!
Much like my working life – I’m a designer for an Edinburgh Interiors company and also a self-employed photographer, my ‘style’ is a bit of a mish mash! I don’t go for a particular ‘look’ but just impulsively go for things that I see and like. Fraser is much more traditional in his taste but pretty much gives me free reign with my ideas for our home, even when I come out with ‘I’m going to paint the entire bedroom dark blue’, just months after painting it pale grey. I love that he trusts me to go for it, although if he’s got a strong opinion on something he’ll stand his ground, generally though we agree!
The Decor
Our vestibule has a Vivienne Westwood ‘Dog Tooth’ wallpaper from Cole & Son which is one of the first things I bought before we had even moved in. My mum found the bench on Gumtree and I spray-painted it white.
Our living / kitchen area is open plan so we went with a relatively neutral kitchen with an island from Ikea and some soft greyish-blue brick style tiles.
The living area has one wall in Farrow & Ball ‘Oval Room Blue’ and curtains in a matching velvet to bring the colour further round the space. The rug was another Gumtree find and luckily the perfect colour with the wall and curtains. Furniture wise this room has the biggest mish-mash of styles – a traditional desk next to an Ikea TV unit, a chesterfield sofa and a wooden trunk coffee table! Our dining table and chairs were second hand which I spray painted and had a glass top cut for the table. It’s amazing what you can achieve with a can of spray paint!
The hall has very little wall space so there’s only really room for a few pictures and some quirky wooden paintings we got on holiday in Croatia. The wall colour is Farrow & Ball ‘Mizzle’ which is also in the second bedroom. It’s such a lovely soft colour, especially for a transitional space.
We recently papered the bathroom with Zoffany wallpaper.
Our bedroom is painted in ‘Velvet Blue’ from Zoffany which is a really deep blue but has a lovely powdery quality to it at the same time. There are lots of gold highlights all around the room to counter the blue such as the port hole mirrors (£10 each on Ebay!), the lamps which are from TKMaxx and spray painted gold and a small gold makeup table – also from TK’s (I basically live there). The fur throw I bought though my work. It’s dangerous working in interiors sometimes, you see so many things you just have to have! We had the wardrobes built in and I painted these away to blend with the walls. The brass hinges and Anthropologie handles add a few more hints of the gold.
I for one adore Carley’s fusion of modern and vintage and the colour palette is to die for. Anyone else fancy a quick trip to Scotland to nip in for a cuppa?
Love the mix of old and new and the use of bold colours and wallpaper. We’ve got a new build too and I hope ours looks as stunning as yours when we’ve finished decorating Carley! X
PS random question but where are your kitchen tiles from? x
Thanks Lisa! Would love to see pics when you are done, Im sure it will be lovely! The tiles were from a local warehouse type supplier in Edinburgh called Collinsons Ceramics. Lots of great colours to choose from too! x
Thank you! I’m now going to spend my lunch break perusing the Collinsons Ceramics website 🙂
I’m sure we have a box of spares at home, I can check and see if there is a name or ref on it for you if you cant fine them! Good luck! x
Ooh yes if you could that would be fab! Thank you x
I love the chair in the living room. Can you tell me where I might be able to find something similar. Great use of colour all over the house.
Hi Sandie. This was an old tartan chair we recovered. You’ll be able to pick up a chair second hand for a good price. Just try to look past the old fabrics to see the shape of the chair is what you want and imagine it in whatever fabric you fancy – choices are endless! If you can find a local upholsterer they will keep you right with fabric quantities etc!
Hi Carley, what a stunning home you have created! I love the little details everywhere. Random question from me – you said you wallpapered the bathroom – was that with a special bathroom wallpaper? I’m trying to convince my husband we should do the top half of our bathroom (which has a bath, no shower, and the bottom half of the room is tiled) in Cole & Son Acquario but he says you aren’t supposed to use wallpaper in the bathroom!
Hi Jenni, Thanks for your lovely comments 🙂 The paper we used was just a normal good quality paper which is perfectly fine in a bathroom however we don’t have it directly above the sink or around the bath. I’d stay away from papering in these direct ‘splash zones!’ and it sounds as though if you have tiling to the lower half you’ll be fine so go for it! I love Acquario, such a fun bathroom paper! x
Such a big fan of this home tour. It’s so nice to see something different featured and see how you can transform a new build space! I absolutely love how they have mixed old and new…I love both looks but always try and stick to one or the other – I guess this just shows you can break the mould and trends and go for what you love no matter what box it falls into and it still look great x
Love this! I’m a big fan of combining old and new and the colours here are wonderful! Also, how adorable is your dog?!
Beautiful home 🙂
Thanks Maike 🙂 He is such a poser!
Beautiful home – LOVE the bathroom (and the doggy).
I’m from Edinburgh – what area is it out of interest?
More of these please 🙂
Hi Lynn
Thanks for your lovely comments
We stay in the Bellevue area! Love it 🙂
I’m not a million miles away – just off Easter Road 🙂
LOVE our city!
Oh my goodness, I love your make-up table!!! And the rest of your home is very stylish too….
This is a really interesting tour – not just for the pretty (which is ace, I especially love the mish mash of styles in the living / kitchen area) but also for the idea of the development. I have always loved period properties, but now owning a Victorian terrace which keeps throwing up new things to sort out/spend money on, a new build where everything is still under warranty seems very appealing!! But I don’t like the layouts – I don’t feel the need for everyone to have an en-suite for example, but if I could find a new build version of my terrace I would be sold!!!! But apparently no-one else thinks like that?!?!
Amy that was one of the main reasons that swayed us for an old house (Edwardian) again. Whilst I can see the point of two bathrooms in a larger house, I’m just not sold on en-suites, especially not for nearly every room. Also, most of the rooms in the new builds were smaller than in an old house. And I do love period features…but new fixtures etc are so very nice and shiny, too!
I love your bathroom and your little dog is real class ❤️
What a lovely home Carley! I love all the blue and the use of textures and pops of gold and yellow, it looks like such a relaxing space! x
Home tours are my favourite feature on rms and this one is a smasher! I live in Edinburgh too! I love that tree wallpaper and have been looking at similar for our snug, when we finally get round to doing it. the only problem I have with these home to its is I get so many ideas and then want to change my own home around again!
