More Make-Up Than Sense {Beauty Haul & Giveaway}

Author: Charlotte O'Shea

It’s been a while folks, and not because I haven’t bought any make-up recently, but because I’ve had all sorts of allergic reactions and breakouts that I haven’t felt I can realistically test that many new products fully.

What I am sharing with you is the products that in recent months I’ve managed (or almost managed) to “hit pan”. i.e. I am definitely going to buy them again (if I haven’t already – the eyeliner and lipstick included in this feature I am already on my second tube).

You will be pleased to hear several are a bargain – nothing gives me greater pleasure than sharing a budget beauty find that genuinely delivers. And even better than cosmetics that are cheap as chips, we have three sets of the “More Make-Up Than Sense” pouches by Rock On Ruby as featured in the header image above, to give away for FREE. Please see the bottom of this feature for full details on how to enter.

The Beauty Blender {From £13.50}

How late I am to this party exactly? I’ll be honest, I just thought the Beauty Blender was yet another boring (and pointless) make-up sponge that served little to no purpose at all. Then I began to see it raved about everywhere, so I bought one and promptly left it in a drawer for months. During the aforementioned breakouts (I’ll go more into the details in a separate post) I desperately needed more coverage, and smooth seamless non patchy type coverage if possible. I remembered the tear-dropped blender thing and used it to kind of “roll and press” both concealer and powder onto lumps, bumps and red flaky patches.

It worked a treat – I don’t even know why but the tool just seems a bit well, magical. I now use it all the time for blotchy bits. The micro versions are currently on my wish list as I think they will fit perfectly in my streamlined make-up bag*

NYX Matte Liquid Liner {£6.00}

I wear liquid liner virtually every day. It’s my “thing”. Most days a very thin line, sometimes a bolder thicker line and occasionally a full on flick happens. There are all sorts of pens and pots I’ve reviewed and recommended over the years, I have a impressive array of options to choose from on my dressing table on any one day. On a normal week day though I want precision and speed. And I want to take it off in the evening with a few swipes of a cotton pad – not endless rubbing away at black smears when all I want to do is crawl into bed.

The NYX matte liquid liner has a very flexible easy-to-use brush. I very rarely make mistakes with it, it doesn’t run and it doesn’t flake. Admittedly it fades after about 8 hours of wear but touch ups are also quick and easy (if you can even be arsed – which if I’m working from home/on the nursery run, I’m really not).

If you want a true black non-fading easy application liner then you need Tom Ford’s eye defining pen in deeper. It’s the BEST but it will set you back an eye watering (see what I did there?) £45 – thus I use mine for special occasions only.

CND Vinyl Weekly Polish in Pink Pursuit {£9.99}

This “millennial pink” phenomenon that’s going on right now well, I must admit to having a little difficulty describing the exact hue. It’s kind of an opaque pink but with a hint of the white/pale/edgy about it. I think. Anyways this CND polish in “Pink Pursuit” comes pretty close (better to google images than go by the Amazon shade example). From the makers of CND Shellac, this Vinyl Weekly varnish really does last 7 days without chipping as long as you use a decent topcoat. I use the matchy matchy one CND recommend to use because you know….marketeers dream.

Elizabeth Arden Forever Bronzing Powder {£29.00}

I’m not a fan of these multi-coloured powder compacts usually. I always find they look pretty but are a bit faddy/for show. And you often don’t want to sweep your brush over every single shade to achieve the perfect hue. This bronzing powder however is different. Uber natural and goes on like silk – the shade “01 Medium” is lovely on my pale yellow-toned epidermis. You can easily build up colour and there is also a “O3 Deep” option.

I don’t add in as much of the pink to my brush swirling action but it does look lovely on it’s own applied as a natural pink blusher/highlighter on cheekbones. Some places have sold out but John Lewis and Look Fantastic still have stock as I type.

L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Matt Lipstick {6.99}

I generally avoid matt lipsticks. I just find them too drying. This “Color Riche” however is beautiful. Like a matt satin it’s creamy and opaque and makes your lips a lovely shape. Sounds odd but it really does. I have the shade “Blush In a Rush” which is an every day rosy pink. It has a brightish undertone to it so it’s perfect for Spring whilst still being fairly neutral/natural. There are lots of other colours to choose from and there is currently 3 for 2 on L’Oreal at Boots. This obviously means you need to buy lots, ok?

*The small pouch by Rock On Ruby is the ideal size to fit in the appropriate amount of cosmetics for daily travel. Becky treated me to this one last year and now I have the grey “More Make-Up Than Sense” version too.

Now for the giveaway! All you need to do is share with us your latest beauty buy (bargain or otherwise) in the comments section of this feature to be in with a chance to win. Rock On Ruby and Rock My Style will then choose three winners at random. You will be contacted via your email that you use for commenting on the blog.

The competition will close on Monday May 8th at 12pm GMT. There is no cash prize alternative and our decision is final. Good Luck everyone and happy shopping!

  1. Next eye liner pencil with a smudger at the other end .Its brilliant goes on really smooth and the smudger stops it looking a hard line and only £6.50 …I luv it

  2. Following the highlighting craze, I thought I should have a go at a bit of contouring. Since having a baby 18 months ago, I don’t have time to apply lots of makeup. My Benefit Hula has always done me well so I purchased Maybelline Master Strobing Stick in light- iridescent, £6.99 last week. This highlighter stick is beautifully smooth and gives my face a wakeful glow. I’ve had several comments on how well I look and my husband even told me I looked pretty; something I credit entirely to this stick! It doesn’t take any skill to apply. Just make sure you rub it in a little.

  3. My latest beauty purchases have been a new garnier honey flower day cream as I splashed out on an anti wrinkle cream that was leaving my face so dry! So far I’m liking the new one. My mum also treated me to YSL touché eclat blur primer, I’m not sure how well it’s working as a primer but feels gorgeous on my skin.
    Make up wise I bought the clarins instant concealer which has been spoken about on RMS, have been happy with that so far!! Also bought a No7 eyebrow pencil as a cheaper alternative to my benefit one and that’s been great as well and saved me a tenner.

  4. Maybelline; Instant anti age The Eraser Eye concealer. As good as the Este Lauder BB double wear concealer but a fraction of the price.

    1. Anna…really? I swear by the Estee Lauder one so I’m definitely going to give this a whirl. Thanks for the tip x

      1. Really! I started using the Estee Lauder one due to your recommendation but I’ve switched alliances now! The Maybelline The Falsies Push Up Drama mascara is also really good, great staying power. I have uber sensitive skin and also get ezcema around my eyes so have always been careful and avoided budget buys but these two are great. Hope you agree 🙂 x

  5. I can’t get enough of Maybelline NY age rewind eraser dark circles treatment. It’s light but still has great coverage and blends like a dream! It’s got a yellow undertone but that’s great for those of us with big purple eye bags, all for a great price too!

  6. I’m totally in love with L’Oreal Lumi Magique Primer, it can be worn by itself or as a base to your foundation {you can apply more on top of your foundation for that dewy look} it illuminates the skin beautifully without looking like you’ve applied an entire highlighter stick to your face. It provides up to 8 hours of hydration and cost £9.99. A product I will definitely be keeping in my make-up bag! ♡

  7. I just bought the new L’Oréal Miss Baby Roll mascara and it’s better than the Lancôme one I’d been using! Bargain!

  8. I have just purchased a load of technics makeup 💄 to test out, I’ve heard it’s quite good and the price is fantastic!! So far so good! Definitely helping with the bags lol (I have a little teether at the moment) absolutely loving the technic get gorgeous highlighting powder in peach candy!! Xx

  9. Bare minerals bare skin complete coverage serum concealer is amazing, at £21 it’s not cheap but I’ve had mine for at least 6 months and use it daily. It goes on like a dream and doesn’t cake under the eye like a lot of concealers but still offers fantastic coverage, great for tired days!

  10. Daniel Sandler Watercolour Blush in Flush. I’ve seen it all over the internet for such a long time and when my current Bobbi Brown cream blush hit the pan, I bit the bullet and bought the Watercolour Blush. I love it! I’ve never really got on with powder blush as I have very dry skin and they always seem to sit on the surface and make my face look powdery. Bobbi Brown has been my go to for years, but I think the Watercolour blush may have just pipped it to the post. It’s so easy to apply and makes me look all glowy and flushed. Love it!

    And I’m definitely going to try the NYX liquid liner. I’m currently using an Avon one that my Mother in law was given in a gift bag, which is fine, but it’s already drying out so harder to use. Time for some shopping!

    1. Sara you will love it I promise – I’m almost ready to buy my third one and the brush is so easy to use. I have the watercolour blush but not used it yet – I’m hoping it will work for summer x

  11. After a few years of separation, last week I rediscovered my love for Benefit’s High Beam highlighter. It’s subtle enough to wear in the daytime, but adds glamour to a nighttime look. And it photographs beautifully. It was in my wedding make-up kit, and I love the gentle glow I have in all my bridal pics. So happy five year anniversary to my husband, and to my crush on my High Beam.

  12. best eyeliner ever (in my book) – Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner Black – I did a repeat purchase I have been that impressed – and 14.50 not cheap but not a scary price – and it really is worth it. I have also been impressed with Stila One step correct – based on other peoples comments when I have used it and been told my skin looks radiant (and believe me I felt anything but radiant) 🙂 £24 so not cheap but it goes on really nicely 🙂
    I did also buy Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips matt lippy due to one of your recentish posts Charlotte – and I am loving it!

    1. Janey I love Hot Lips – am wearing “Valentine” as I type 🙂

      I’ll have a lot at the one step thing as I really rate Stila – the liquid liner you mention is one in my kit x

  13. I just love my new Bobbi Brown art stick. The rose brown colour is gorgeous and it lasts a really long time on my lips. I like to put a bit on my cheeks too. I found it really useful to add a bit of colour to my face quickly, especially after having my first baby as there wasn’t a lot of time for applying make up in the first few weeks. I’m trying to decide which colour to get next.

  14. Mine is an old favourite – but I also wear liquid liner every. single. day and the best one I have ever found is the Rimmel Exaggerate Liquid Eyeliner. It slicks on quickly and easily, and lasts pretty well. I’m definitely going to be tempted to add the NYX liquid liner to my make-up bag though, I MIGHT even treat myself to the Tom Ford… x

  15. My latest purchase is the Darphin intral soothing cream…meant to be amazing for reducing redness, which is a problem for me at the moment. Its non scented and good for sensitive skin. So far I’ve only been testing it for a day, so the jury is still out! Not a bargain though either, so I’m hoping for good things! I’m also in the market for a summer sunscreen so will hoping someone recommends one suitable for oily, sensitive skin types. Also being a bit of an Elizabeth Arden fan I’m definitely going to check out the bronzer! 🙂

  16. I recently treated myself to the Becca pressed highlighter in the colour moonstone – I love it! Subtle enough to wear every day – I can’t go without now! – but still has a glow which is very much there. As a new mum I find this bit of shimmer helps distract from the dark eye circles too, at least that’s what I tell myself anyway! A new staple in my makeup bag.

    1. Emily this is also my “go to” highlighter – it is the very subtle and I like the golden undertones, they look more natural than a lot of the white/pink alternatives x

  17. My latest bargain find is the Primark PS Pro finishing powder is an absolute steal. It is basically the Laura Mercier Setting Powder but for £5 instead of £29. x

  18. YSL Les Sahariennes cream bronzer- It’s pretty spendy at £32, but I think it’s totally worth it as it gives such a lovely, natural, bronzey glow to the skin!

  19. I’ve just discovered Lancôme Artliner and I have no idea where it’s been all my life! Definitely the best liquid liner I’ve ever tried (though I may just give the NYX a whirl…I like their Ombre Blush).

    I’ve heard some good things about the Primark make up range recently – the setting powder mentioned above sounds worth a try and British Beauty Blogger has given high praise to the highlighting powder.

    Also, Charlotte – please let us know how the watercolour blush works out for you. I’ve been tempted by it a few times but have never taken the plunge. I’d love to know what you think! x

    1. I used Artliner for YEARS Tracy – I even wore it on my wedding day. Then for some reason I bought a few which dried out really quickly so moved into something else. I would say the NYX is of equal quality so worth a try. I’ll definitely let you know on the blush! x

  20. Oooh I love this post, if not just for all the amazing recommendations in the comments. Mine has to be the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer in Boots – £4.19 and it is definitely the best concealer I have ever used, even beats my Nars Creamy Concealer and my Urban Decay one!!! x

  21. I’ve not bought a massive amount of make up recently due to similar reasons to you charlotte (I’m sure it’s seasonal!) but I’ve been hammering skincare!

    Make up wise I’m on my second tube of Bourjois Effet 3D lipgloss in Transparent. It’s amazing, not sticky or gloopy and mega mega mega moisturising so perfect for my random chapped lips at the minute!

    I’m also loving 3 NYX products : the under eye corrector (it’s giving my original Bobbi brown a run for its money). The micro eyebrow pencil AMAZING and the dewy setting spray (helping keep my face on all day and not drying it out!).

    Skincare I’ve gone a bit more luxe (I think my bargain attempts buggered my face up!) so I’m back on Clarins green cleansing milk and they’re extra comfort cleansing cream (old formula was loads better but this is still good) and the extra comfort toner to try and keep hydration up!
    Oh and Clinique moisture surge overnight mask as a night cream and the matching face mist throughout the day!

    I think I need to retract my ‘I’ve not been buying much statement!!)

    1. Vicky my sister swears by the Clinique Moisture Surge overnight mask! I really need to try it out. Excellent list of buys x

      1. 😀Charlotte it’s amazing. I can still feel a bit on my skin the next morning and everything is glowy and plumped up.

  22. I’ve recently discovered a love of Max Factor! I previously ignored the brand thinking it a bit ‘granny-isa’ but I’m in love with the creme puff blushes (esp nude mauve and lovely pink) and the new creme bronzer has just enough glow without any sparkle/ glitter.

  23. The last item of makeup I bought was a Violet Voss – Holy Grail Pallete. I have no idea what it does by my fiancée loves it!

  24. Since being the lucky recipient of a Marks and Spencer’s advent calendar for Christmas, I have been busy trying out all the products. I have absolutely loved Alpha H Liquid Gold, so much so that after a couple of applications, I went ahead and ordered the full size from Look Fantastic. At the time it was on offer which meant I got a full size cleanser for free.. which I also love! I just checked Look Fantastic again and the Liquid Gold is currently on offer but this time with a free mask. My hand is hovering over the “add to basket”….!

  25. My go to day time look is courtesy of benefit ‘They’re real’ mascara in black- I’ve never found a better mascara, I have 3! ( travel size/ gym bag/ big make up bag!) then quick flick of eyeliner, always liquid, blacker the better- maybelline Master Ink in matte black. Having spend an hour wandering around makeup stands drawing little black lines on the back of my hands ( and looking mad) to see which faded/ smudged and which I could remove easily once home I was satisfied this was the best for me and I’ve never looked back!

  26. I got a beauty blender too months ago and love it! Mine is a real technique one not the original one but I’m really happy with it and it was a bit cheaper! Not bought much lately (house stuff) but I did get some benefit dandelion liquid stuff in a pot like high beam and is fab! I just use that around my eyes and cheek area and a bit of powder and concealer (currently using Boing) and no need for foundation! It brightens up and evens out skin a treat! The other thing is a lord and berry liner and smudged which is lovely texture wise and seems to last through my workouts! I’m hoping this summer to have a good old make up haul once our house is sorted (for now ha!) xx

  27. I recently picked up Benefit They’re Real Double the Lip – it’s a lipstick and liner in one so great for the old time saving, and I’m finding it lasts pretty well. I went for the Lusty Rose colour which is a nice natural pink as I’m not too brave with my lippy colours. Loving all the tips here….I see some spending ahead!

  29. The pillow talk matt lipstick by Charlotte Tilbury. lOVE it! And Mac strobe cream- such a beautiful shimmer across my cheek bones

  30. Maxfactor Miracle Match Foundation!

    I can’t believe I have lived without it for so long! It is so reasonably priced, pale enough for my skin tone and it is definitely giving my Guerlain Lingerie de Peau a run for its money!

  31. I just treated myself to the Cover FX illuminating setting spray, as I had a wedding to go to and wanted to give my make up a bit of extra staying power. I’m now addicted! It really works to keep make up in place and adds a lovely subtle glow.

    I’m off to check out the CND polish – my beloved Nails Inc gel-look topcoat has just gone gloopy so this looks like it might be an excellent replacement!

  32. L’Oréal True Match Foundation – the first time I’ve found a high-street brand which does a shade that matches my fair skin. It builds nicely but can just use a small amount too for light coverage in the day.

    Also, Natural Collection lipsticks – absolute bargain at £1.99!

  33. You know, this is making me want to run out and buy new treats as I can barely remember when I last bought any make up! I’m fairly sure my last few purchases were my Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation – I’m still not entirely happy with this, I want beautiful perfect skin and I can still see pores, I thought this was meant to be the most full coverage out there?

    My budget buys are the Maybelline Rocket Volume mascara in the blue tube, it gives lovely everyday eyelashes and I love the silicon brush. I always buy their under eye concealor with th esponge applicator already mentioned several times above. Plus their matt powder is a repeat purchase too.

    When I was younger I bought expensive make up but now I’m more mid range as I’m buying a house and being more sensible. However, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Bobbi Brown Sparkle eyeshadow, mine is called silver moon I think, it goes over anything, it’s soooo pretty and everyone compliments it. I’ve never seen anything budget level that has that level of sparkle!

  34. After suffering terrible breakouts, I decided that it was probably my skincare routine that need ditching. Looking for something to calm and nourish, whilst gently cleansing and exfoliating I started to use Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel £29.99. It smells like Turkish delight, and I apply it to dry skin and let it sink in for a couple of moments before removing with a hot cloth. After that, I am applying Institut Esthederm Intensif Propolis Cream 50ml £37.99. Propolis is a great product to use on spot prone skin, and I haven’t had any breakouts since (This from a girl who has suffered from terrible breakouts since my teens) Really happy with this gel wash and cream my skin is looking great, glowing and blemish free! Although both products may seem a expensive, a little goes a long way (and I’m using less foundation!!).

  35. My latest beauty buy was the Benefit Goof Proof eyebrow pencil! I love it, the colour match is perfect & it doesn’t budge all day!

  36. I have been struggling to find a decent mascara that doesn’t go on thick and globby. I think I have just found this in a Soap & Glory mascara “Thick & Fast”.

  37. Chanel’s coco rouge shine in noir moderne, perfect sheer ‘bitten’ red wine type colour, I love it! Other than that, the YSL tint in balm, in shade 7 (sheer pale coral) is also a strong contender for my favourite spring splurge!

  38. My skin is a bit of a nightmare… dry/sensitive/rosacea (how can you have so many skin types on one face?!) + shift work makes it a right kerfuffle to deal with. Neals Yard ‘Rehydrating Rose Facial Oil’ is currently saving my bacon overnight. Worth every penny. Thank. Goodness.

  39. Love a beauty post!
    I have recently been using Rimmel London Magnif’eyes Double-Ended Shadow & Liner,
    It is such a quick thing to use and the bronze colour is very pretty for summer.
    I have a million make up brushes but I recently purchased the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush that was on offer and it’s brilliant for applying foundation it blends perfectly.
    I hadn’t used a blusher for ages but now I’m obsessed the Bourjois Little Round Pot Blusher in the colour rose d’or is a very pretty pink and I find lasts all day

  40. I’ve started using several products from The Ordinary based on your recommendations. I’ve only been using them for a couple of weeks or so but I’m already incredibly impressed.
    I’ve also started using the Superfacialist Cleansing oil, also loving it.
    Finally I used to use MAC mineralize liquid foundation, swore by it for years (it’s lovely if you like a dewy finish with not too much coverage). But after running out I needed a new one to tide me over, I ended up buying a bottle of Rimmel Match Perfection. It’s as good, if not better than the MAC one, and it’s a fraction of the price!

  41. treated myself to the nuxe shimmering Dry Oil Huile Prodigieuse – Smells amazing and love the golden shimmer for summer

  42. I got a little bit obsessed with semi-permanent eyelash extensions following my wedding last year. I loved that they made everything look better without even trying. Even bleary eyed after a few wake-ups by the baby there was an instant bit of glam which helped my eyes look big and bright. I’ve found that this is a bit costly and time consuming to keep up (especially with a baby), so I now only have eyelash extensions for special occasions. NARS Audacious Mascara is the nearest I’ve come to achieving the look of my eyelash extensions using a tube. Not a cheap product, but cheaper than the upkeep of semi-permanents and much more efficient.

  43. My latest naughty little purchase, was a glow blurring powder from Becca cosmetics. Ideal for summer..as well as making me look a little more awake when my pain is full on. Love it! Thanks for the comp x

  44. I have the new down to earth eye palette from the Body Shop. You get to choose 4 colours and they clip into the palette so when one runs out you can replace. Also had a 3 for 2 offer so got it cheaper.

  45. I recently picked up a bottle of Estee Lauder Advanced Night repair eye serum and I’m absolutely loving the results.
    With lots of late nights studying and a poorly baby, I haven’t been sleeping well and I was starting to notice dark circles under my eyes. This stuff has done wonders for me and has left the skin around my eyes looking brighter and hydrated.
    I will definitely be buying more. Highly recommend.

  46. I’ve just bought the DiorSkin forever perfect cushion foundation – it’s amazing! Never used a cushion foundation before and I avoid foundation unless I’m going out as my skin is oily and normally results in a slimy cakey mess after a few hours, but I’m completely obsessed with this one! Would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a light, buildable foundation that looks like “real skin” xx

  47. I bought a coral “they’re real” lipstick from Benefit. Don’t usually use Benefit makeup anymore but I really do love it. It’s got a built in lip liner in a few shades darker so you get the contoured look in one go.

  48. Bare Minerals Frame and Define Brow Styler in ‘light’. The perfect colour and so easy and effective to use 😊

  49. So many amazing recommendations here that I feel almost itchy to go on a spending spree!

    I normally use Estee lauder double wear foundation but it was starting to dry out my face so on a whim bought the rimmel 25 hour foundation with comfort serum. It goes on so smoothly and gives excellent coverage. I’m so glad i found it. Also, I’m loving the pundland liquid eyeliner which is easy to use and is beautifully black and lasts as well as anything else I’ve tried.

  50. I love these posts with so many hints and tips…
    At present I’m so into my skincare as trying to bare more due to the summer months on the horizon however I have brought a few amazing clarins make up products part of there 1 minute make up hero collection and they really do only take lesss than one minute to get some beautiful effects.
    A few must haves their lips oils wow oh wow for summer time and hydration I love their new mint one as plumps the lips and makes your teeth look whiter always a winner for me.
    clarins Supra volume mascara well if you want your eyelashes to stand out from the croud without wearing false lashes this is a true hit and also helps your eyelashes grow longer with built in skincare and one last mention is their 3 dot eye liner if you have a shakey hand like me this helps you do tiny dots on your lash line to build up to the perfect liquid liner without making mistakes i love it and now do several of me friends 😘

  51. NYX Micro Brow pencil is amazing – a really soft pencil with a spoolie on the end!! A few NARS matte velvet lip pencils have also found their way into my collection over the past few months…!

  52. Finally used a voucher I got for Christmas to purchase my first MAC foundation. Hoping it makes me look like a Snapchat filter.

  53. Benefit They’re Real mascara using Boots points so a bargain! 😉I like it but not sure it’s good enough to pay full whack. Loving the make up bags, going over to look at their website now!

  54. The Anastasia Beverley Hills Brow Wiz, which comes in TEN shades. INCLUDING GINGER! (Well, “auburn” but same thing). And it’s so fine there is very little danger at ending up with a ghastly caterpillar brow situ. Its just magical!

  55. I was looking for a Charlottle Tilbury highlighter and needed it quickly (night out with new mum eye bags!) and they had none in stock, so I brought the NYX liquid illuminator instead only £8 and it’s amazing, really lovely effect which can be used over or under foundation, and you can get it in boots! Definitely helped to hide those sleepless nights! xx

  56. Love a makeup article. I’m in love with my £4 bottle of almond oil which has saved my horrid, dry winter skin! I also love my Clinique chubby blusher. Gives a lovely smooth finish and glow. I’d happily buy makeup all day long! Fun fun fun!
