A Fresh and Airy Guest Bedroom

Way back in March I mentioned about my plans to update the guest bedroom using only accessories. I still need to add a rug, change the handles on the chest of drawers and add a couple more blush or dare I say it ‘millennial pink’ accents. However essentially the basics are in place and it’s looking much more fresh and calm. Let’s not forget this a guest room so I’m not expecting to set the world of interior design alive.

What Stayed

• The ivory metal bed. We originally bought ours from Argos a few years ago. I don’t think they have the same design anymore but there are lots of similar ones.
• The chest of drawers from our old cottage. My friend who gave us this piece of furniture always laughs when she sees this set of drawers as it’s about twenty years old now. No matter what I do one of the handles always tilts.
• The bedside table which I picked up in a vintage shop in Hove about five years ago. I think it’s painted in an Annie Sloan chalk paint.
• The laundry cupboard which used to sit in our old bedroom, originally from Home Sense a very long time ago.
• The velvet tufted loveseat which my husband bought me from Oliver Bonas.
• I also brought in one of the old stools I had from our previous kitchen to act as a bedside table for the other side of the bed.

Upgrades and Updates

As you’ll have noticed I kept a lot of the spendy items and so with it stayed the traditional cottage vibe. As mentioned in the previous post I wanted to update from the previous shabby chic style so I had to unleash the moths from my purse and buy a few bits and pieces to update the decor.

#1 Geometric

The geometric mirror was a find from HomeSense. At £50 it was a steal compared to the very similar West Elm version and I think it complements the angled walls and alcoves well.

#2 Blonde wood

I used scandi style pale wood frames and picture hangers to frame artwork from Desenio and King & McGaw. The blush colour scheme in the Brighton print pulls the room together and the black and white Desenio prints are fresh and modern.
I also copied Jenson, our youngest and most stylish Rock My member with an oak peg rail which is great for guests to hang their threads on.

#3 Black elements

I wanted to bring in the darkest hue as it’s unexpected and helps ground the room. The black (and very wayward) candles were from Tiger and were a few quid for three.

#4 Boho cushion

H&M came to the rescue for inexpensive, modern cushions to update the bed. Unfortunately I don’t the fringed one is available online but I have seen some of their new trend images featuring a similar fringed storage basket. We can only hope this hits the stores soon ladies. I also added some pinkish pillow cases from La Redoute under the old Home Sense bedding to bring it up to date. I also added the Moroccan blanket style throw from our bedroom here. This one is an old one from M&S but Monsoon Home have a very similar one.

#5 Lighting

The simple desk lamp style bedside table lights are from Dunelm and would suit so many different styles of decor. The single bulb ceiling light was from George and ties in well with the other elements.

I’ve tried to mention where most of the bits and pieces are from but do give me a nudge if there’s anything I haven’t mentioned.
