I read in the news last week that more than half of us secretly wish for a wet bank holiday so we’ve got an excuse to laze about at home. I personally think that this is tosh and pray for sun on the long weekends so that I can hit the shops during the day and then have stereotypically British BBQs on the evenings. Here’s my round up of the skirts on the high street that have caught my eye this week that I may well be investing in…

The Embroidered Skirt

I first noticed this skirt in Zara a few weeks ago and thought it was the prettiest thing I’d seen in ages. In fact I’m surprised they’ve still got it in stock because Zara stuff usually flies off the shelves and once it’s gone, it’s GONE. At just shy of £40 it’s not a bargain but the intricate embroidery detailing makes it look so much spendier than its price tag. There isn’t one thing that I don’t love about it. The delicate scallop detailing on the hemline, the fact that it’s mainly black so would go with EVERYTHING, and the way the pattern is continued even at the back. So versatile you could still be wearing it at Christmas and so pretty that you could almost frame it.

The Flippy Skirt

OMG. Is this denim flippy skirt with braces the new pinafore dress for my wardrobe? I think it just might be. I adore the pocket flap detailing and the little cross strap at the back. I have jeans in the same midwash shade and have found it to be such a versatile colour. It goes with Breton stripes, my favourite crisp white tees and grey sweatshirts, and looks good with pops of colour too. Also not the end of the world if a two-year-old smears Bolognese sauce on it.

The Midi Skirt

Have you noticed that recently, skirts have gone all demure? Take this flowy blush midi from Asos. It is the perfect length and I like the way the poppers stop two thirds of the way down so a little bit of leg is visible but without being too in-your-face. It looks great styled with a summery roll-neck as per the Asos model but would look equally as good dressed down with a slogan tee, or dressed up with a cami. It also comes in black, white, grey or khaki (all my favourite clothes colours right there), and is also available in the Asos curve range.

The Floral Skirt

Another demure little number is this floral pencil skirt from Oasis. Pencil skirts are hands down the most flattering shape of skirt for my figure so this is right up my street. I would NEVER have thought to team this mainly cream skirt with a white top but as the image shows, if you add a pair of white shoes, it completely works. The pops of colour mean that you could also wear it with virtually any other colour – check out the video on the Oasis website which shows that it also looks gorgeous with a navy V-neck cami.

The Leopard Print

On the other end of the scale, if you are looking for a glam-but-edgy number, then this ombre animal jacquard skirt fits the bill. I am a sucker for a) anything Topshop and b) anything that looks good with a leather biker jacket, so this a-line number doesn’t disappoint. It’s got that end-of-bank-holiday-drinking-in-a-beer-garden-on-a-school-night vibe down to a T.

What have you lovely lot been buying this long weekend? Any bank holiday bargains? Are there any other skirts on the high street that we need to know about?
