Films and fashion go together like fish and chips. Not films about fashion, apart from The September Issue, they’ve never been particularly good, but fashion in films. Think Annie Hall, Breakfast At Tiffany’s, Clueless and Love Story, all of which provide iconic fashion moments.

To that list I’m adding Inherent Vice, Paul Thomas Anderson’s recently released, bonkers but brilliant film starring Joaquin Phoenix and Katherine Waterston, which is filled with fabulous 70s fashion and interiors inspiration. Watching the film a couple of Saturdays ago I found myself coveting everything in Shasta/Katherine Waterston’s wardrobe, as well as some of Doc/Joaquin Phoenix’s too. I’m clearly not the only one who’s a fan, the character’s California-in-the-70s outfits have scored costume designer Mark Bridges an Oscar nomination.

You don’t have trawl vintage stores to get the look as it’s all over the high street. Here’s my fave Inherent Vice-alike finds…

Reclaimed Vintage Embroidered Tunic Top, £38, ASOS

I’ve wanted one of these Mexican-style embroidered tops for, like, ever but never actually gotten around to buying one. Seeing Shasta working the look hard as she walks along the beach with Doc might be the final push I need to finally do it.

Rectangle Ring, £7.50, Arrow Studs, £7.50, both Topshop

The 70s look is going to be unavoidable this season and turquoise jewellery is an easy entry point. If you’re not lucky enough to have some original 70s pieces in the family (me either) it’s going to be all over the high street. Topshop are already on it with this ace ring and earrings.

Vintage Style Parka Vest, £59.99, Zara

Doc sports a lightweight khaki jacket although it’s not sleeveless like this one. However, I love it, so it’s in.

Straw Hat, £9.99, H&M

Another nicked from Doc inspiration, I do love a straw trilby or fedora (what IS the difference?) and can’t wait to start wearing mine again – bought from Topshop last summer, Charlotte and I have the same one – as soon as it’s warm enough.

Honeycomb glassware, from £2.99, Zara Home

There is some highly covetable glassware throughout the film and this honeycomb line from Zara Home has a similar vibe. I like it so much I may have just bought myself a couple of the glasses. I really want the jug too!
