I would happily sit in a bath of baked beans, or stay silent for a day, or push my body to extreme limits. However I’m not sure I would ever have the courage to shave off all my hair in the name of charity.

But that’s exactly what Rich’s mum is doing tomorrow. Moreover, she’s letting Lyra take the first few snips. Yes, she is letting her uber-excitable and excessively clumsy three-year-old grandchild loose with the scissors. For Lyra, whose only experience with scissors has been to help me cut washi tape for DIY Christmas cards, and whose favourite thing to do at the moment is play ‘hairdressers’, this is going to be a dream come true.

And from one awe-inspiring lady to our very own brilliant Becky. Becky’s getting those luscious locks of hers chopped off and will be donating them to The Little Princess Trust as part of the Chop to Your Chin campaign with ghd. If you’re not familiar with the Trust, it’s a downright heart-warming charity that creates real hair wigs for kids who have lost their hair through cancer treatments and other illnesses. The charity will accept any hair that’s seven inches or longer and if you book in at a participating salon to have the chop on 21 September then the haircut will be free.

There’s a lot of scary stuff going on in the world at the moment. A LOT. It makes me worry to think about what this strange little planet that we live on is going to be like when my kids are old enough to fend for themselves. But random acts of kindness and charities such as these restore my faith in humanity somewhat and give me a glimmer of hope that there are still a lot of decent souls out there.

What have you done in the name of greater good? Would you ever shave your head for charity?

Moira is raising money for Macmillan via their Brave the Shave campaign in memory of her dad. And Becky is going to be donating her tresses to the Little Princess Trust.
